Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) with 5+ years of
experience in database administration, production database operations, performance management, security, backup, recovery, and disaster-recovery activities.
The DBA will be responsible for ensuring the availability, performance, security, integrity, and recoverability of enterprise databases. The role will work closely with the System Administrator, Application, Infrastructure, Security, and Development teams to maintain stable and resilient database environments.
A key responsibility will be collaborating with the System Administrator on backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, and infrastructure-related database operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Database Administration and Operations
- Install, configure, upgrade, patch, and maintain database servers and database management systems.
- Perform day-to-day administration of production, staging, development, and test database environments.
- Monitor database availability, health, capacity, and performance.
- Manage database instances, databases, users, roles, permissions, and configurations.
- Ensure databases remain highly available and meet defined operational SLAs.
- Perform routine maintenance, housekeeping, and database health checks.
- Support database migrations, upgrades, and technology refresh initiatives.
1. Database Performance and Optimization
- Monitor and analyze database performance, resource utilization, and capacity.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
- Analyze execution plans and optimize SQL queries, indexes, stored procedures, and database configurations.
- Perform indexing and database maintenance activities.
- Monitor CPU, memory, storage, I/O, connections, and transaction performance.
- Establish performance baselines and proactively identify potential issues.
1. Backup and Recovery
- Design, implement, and monitor database backup strategies.
- Ensure regular full, incremental/differential, and transaction-log backups, as applicable.
- Monitor backup jobs and investigate failures.
- Perform database restoration and recovery activities when required.
- Regularly validate backups through restore testing.
- Maintain appropriate backup retention and recovery procedures.
- Work closely with the System Administrator to ensure backup infrastructure and storage are aligned with database recovery requirements.
1. Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
- Support the development and maintenance of Database Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies.
- Participate in DR planning, implementation, testing, and periodic exercises.
- Support database replication, failover, and recovery mechanisms.
- Ensure databases meet defined RPO and RTO requirements.
- Participate in business continuity and disaster-recovery drills.
- Document recovery procedures and maintain up-to-date DR runbooks.
- Coordinate with System Administration, Infrastructure, Network, Security, and Application teams during DR events.
1. High Availability
- Implement and maintain appropriate database high-availability solutions.
- Monitor replication, clustering, mirroring, Always On, log shipping, or equivalent technologies depending on the database platform.
- Perform planned failover and failback activities.
- Investigate database availability incidents and minimize service disruption.
- Ensure appropriate redundancy for critical database workloads.
1. Security and Access Management
- Manage database security, authentication, authorization, roles, and privileges.
- Implement the principle of least privilege for database access.
- Review and manage privileged database accounts.
- Support database access provisioning and deprovisioning processes.
- Monitor database security events and suspicious activities.
- Support vulnerability remediation and database security hardening.
- Ensure database configurations align with organizational security policies.
1. Monitoring and Incident Management
- Implement and maintain database monitoring and alerting.
- Proactively identify database failures, capacity issues, performance degradation, and other operational risks.
- Troubleshoot and resolve database incidents and service requests.
- Participate in incident, problem, and change-management processes.
- Perform root-cause analysis for recurring database issues.
- Maintain incident records and technical documentation.
1. Capacity and Storage Management
- Monitor database growth, storage consumption, and resource utilization.
- Forecast future database capacity requirements.
- Coordinate with System Administrators and Infrastructure teams for storage expansion.
- Implement database archiving and housekeeping strategies.
- Identify opportunities to optimize storage utilization and database performance.
1. Database Upgrade and Maintenance
- Plan and execute database version upgrades, patches, and security updates.
- Perform testing and validation before production implementation.
- Coordinate maintenance windows with application and infrastructure teams.
- Ensure appropriate rollback and recovery procedures are available for major changes.
- Maintain database configuration and version documentation.
1. Development and Application Support
- Work with application and development teams to resolve database-related issues.
- Support application deployments and database schema changes.
- Review database scripts, stored procedures, queries, and migration scripts.
- Assist development teams with database performance optimization.
- Support database integration and data migration activities.
- Provide technical guidance on database architecture and best practices.
1. Documentation and Compliance
- Maintain database architecture, configuration, backup, recovery, and operational documentation.
- Develop and maintain SOPs, runbooks, and troubleshooting guides.
- Maintain database inventory and dependency information.
- Provide evidence and support for internal and external audits.
- Ensure database operations comply with organizational security and compliance requirements.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong experience in database administration and production operations.
- Expertise in at least one major enterprise database platform, such as:
o Microsoft SQL Server
o Oracle Database
o PostgreSQL
o MySQL/MariaDB
- Strong SQL knowledge and troubleshooting capabilities.
- Database backup and recovery.
- Database performance tuning and optimization.
- High availability and disaster recovery.
- Database security and access management.
- Database monitoring and capacity management.
- Database patching and upgrades.
- Data migration and database maintenance.
Infrastructure Enterprise IT Knowledge
Working knowledge of the following will be advantageous:
- Windows and/or Linux Server administration.
- Storage and SAN/NAS concepts.
- Virtualization platforms.
- Cloud database services.
- Networking fundamentals.
- Active Directory / Entra ID integration.
- Monitoring and enterprise backup solutions.
- ITIL-based incident, problem, and change management.
Backup DR Collaboration
The DBA will work closely with the System Administrator to:
- Define and maintain database backup schedules.
- Ensure backup infrastructure supports database recovery requirements.
- Coordinate backup storage and retention.
- Conduct periodic restoration testing.
- Maintain DR infrastructure and database recovery procedures.
- Execute planned and emergency database failover/failback.
- Validate RPO/RTO compliance.
- Participate in periodic DR and business-continuity exercises.
Experience and Competencies
- 5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator or Database Engineer.
- Proven experience supporting production database environments.
- Solid troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Experience working in 24×7 or SLA-driven enterprise environments is preferred.
- Strong understanding of database availability, performance, security, backup, and recovery.
- Ability to work collaboratively with System Administration, Infrastructure, Security, Application, and Development teams.
- Strong documentation and communication skills.
- Ability to respond effectively to critical database incidents and production outages.
Preferred Certifications
Certifications in relevant database technologies will be an advantage, such as:
- Microsoft SQL Server certifications
- Oracle Database certifications
- PostgreSQL certifications
- AWS/Azure/GCP database certifications
- ITIL certification
- SAP S4 HANA
