Job Description – School Librarian

School: Universal High School, Dahisar
Position: School Librarian
Location: Dahisar, Mumbai

Key Responsibilities Library Management

- Manage the day-to-day operations of the school library and ensure an organised, welcoming, and student-friendly environment.
- Catalogue, classify, label, shelve, and maintain books and other library resources systematically.
- Maintain accurate records of books, periodicals, digital resources, issues, returns, and inventory.
- Manage the library circulation system and ensure timely return and proper handling of resources.
- Conduct periodic stock verification and identify damaged, outdated, or missing resources.
- Recommend new books, reference materials, magazines, newspapers, and digital resources based on curriculum and student interests.
- Coordinate the acquisition, processing, and display of new library resources.
- Ensure appropriate preservation and care of library materials.

Student Engagement & Reading Culture

- Encourage students to develop a regular reading habit and become independent learners.
- Guide students in selecting age-appropriate books based on their interests, reading levels, and academic needs.
- Conduct engaging library sessions for students across different grades.
- Organise reading programmes, book clubs, author interactions, storytelling sessions, book reviews, reading challenges, and literary activities.
- Create attractive book displays and themed reading corners to encourage students to explore different genres.
- Promote reading beyond textbooks, including fiction, non-fiction, biographies, reference books, graphic novels, and age-appropriate literature.
- Support students in developing research, information-literacy, and critical-thinking skills.

Academic & Curriculum Support

- Collaborate with teachers to identify library resources that support classroom learning and curriculum requirements.
- Assist students and teachers in locating reliable information and appropriate reference material.




- Develop curated reading lists and resource recommendations for different subjects and grade levels.
- Support project-based and inquiry-based learning by helping students access relevant resources.
- Introduce students to effective research practices, including information evaluation, referencing, responsible use of sources, and digital literacy.
- Support teachers in integrating library resources into lessons and learning activities.

Digital Library & Technology

- Manage and promote the use of available digital library resources, e-books, databases, and educational platforms.
- Maintain the library database/software and ensure records are updated regularly.
- Help students develop responsible and effective digital research skills.
- Stay updated with emerging trends in school libraries, educational technology, and information resources.

Events & School Initiatives

- Plan and coordinate activities for Library Week, World Book Day, reading campaigns, literary events, and book fairs.
- Organise inter-house or inter-school literary competitions where required.
- Encourage student participation in storytelling, debates, book reviews, creative writing, quizzes, and other reading-related activities.
- Contribute to school exhibitions, assemblies, cultural programmes, and academic events as required.

Educational Qualifications

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Library Science / Library & Information Science (B.Lib.I.Sc. / M.Lib.I.Sc.) or an equivalent qualification.
- Knowledge of library classification and cataloguing systems such as Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC).
- Familiarity with library management software and digital library systems.
- Positive command of English; knowledge of Hindi/Marathi will be an advantage.

Experience

- 2–5 years of relevant experience in a school library, preferably in a reputed school.
- Experience working with primary and secondary school students will be preferred.
- Freshers with strong library-science qualifications and excellent communication skills may also be considered.

Pay: From ₹25,000.00 per month
