Role: Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)
Work Hours: Overlap with US PST
Engagement Type: Full-time (40 hours/week)
Remote: Yes, 100%
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, execute, and maintain scalable automated test suites across:
- Component-level testing
- API and service-level testing
- Integration testing
- End-to-end functional testing
- Regression and release-validation testing
- Non-functional, resiliency, and performance-testing support
- Build and maintain high-quality automation code using Java and/or Python.
- Work within Illumio's existing Java/Selenium automation framework and contribute recommendations for framework modernization, tooling improvements, execution stability, and test strategy.
- Take ownership of test automation frameworks, including reusable libraries, framework architecture, test data, reporting, test execution reliability, and maintainability.
- Partner with software engineers, product managers, and quality leadership to define testable requirements, identify quality risks, and build quality into the software development lifecycle.
- Develop and execute API, integration, and UI test automation using tools such as Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, REST/API testing libraries, or comparable technologies.
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and improve quality gates, reporting, release readiness, and feedback cycles.
- Investigate failures in CI/CD or test environments; identify whether the root cause is related to the application, service/API, test automation, workplace, test data, infrastructure, or an external dependency.
- Support release sign-off by clearly communicating test results, risk assessments, defects, coverage gaps, and release recommendations.
- Allocate approximately 20% of capacity to performance-testing support, including workload execution, baseline analysis, bottleneck identification, and collaboration with developers and infrastructure teams.
- Contribute to testing of cloud-native, distributed, and service-oriented applications, including failure handling, resiliency,
scalability, and dependency behavior.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, eliminate flaky tests, improve developer productivity, and increase automation coverage and engineering velocity.
- Participate actively in technical discussions and propose practical improvements rather than waiting for detailed task assignments.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience in Software Development Engineering in Test, Quality Engineering, Software Testing, or test automation
- Experience supporting SaaS, cloud-based, enterprise software, distributed-system, or cybersecurity products.
- Strong programming skills in Java and/or Python, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, and reusable automation code.
- Hands-on experience with web/UI automation tools such as:
- Selenium
- Playwright
- Cypress
- Or comparable modern automation frameworks
- Strong experience developing automated tests at multiple layers, including:
- API testing
- Component-level testing
- Integration testing
- End-to-end functional testing
- Regression and release-validation testing
- Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and working in Git-based development environments.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms and cloud-native technologies, such as AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, microservices, containers, or distributed services.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues across applications, APIs, backend services, test frameworks, cloud infrastructure, environments, test data, and third-party dependencies.
- Familiarity with performance-testing concepts, including throughput, latency, concurrency, response-time analysis, workload design, and bottleneck investigation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate test status, release risks, root-cause findings, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ownership mindset, curiosity, and ability to operate effectively in an evolving, fast-paced engineering environment.
- Experience building, owning, maintaining, and improving test automation frameworks.
