Role & responsibilities
- Design, develop, maintain, and enhance embedded firmware for enterprise and data-center storage products, including NVMe/SATA controllers, RAID, and encryption controllers.
- Analyze product requirements and translate them into firmware architecture, detailed design, implementation, and validation activities.
- Develop low-level firmware in C and work closely with hardware, validation, driver, and system-software teams.
- Work on storage and system protocols including NVMe, PCIe, NVMe-MI, SATA/AHCI, RAID, MCTP, PLDM, VDM, I2C, SPI, and UART.
- Debug complex firmware and system-level issues using JTAG, protocol analyzers, logic analyzers, and other embedded debugging tools.
- Analyze firmware-hardware interactions, boot flows, initialization sequences, and embedded controller behavior.
- Develop and maintain firmware features related to secure boot, Root of Trust (RoT), encryption, SED, and TCG Opal.
- Perform defect triage, root-cause analysis, corrective action, and resolution of internal and customer-reported issues.
- Develop unit tests and validation strategies, with a focus on high code quality and 90% code-coverage targets.
- Optimize firmware for reliability, performance, interoperability, security, and resource utilization.
- Participate in architecture reviews, design reviews, code reviews, technical discussions, and release-readiness activities.
- Collaborate with global engineering, validation, hardware, software, and customer teams to resolve technical issues and deliver product enhancements.
- Support firmware, driver, and software releases, including qualification, regression, and release validation.
- Prepare technical documentation, RCA reports, design documents, status reports, and customer-facing technical presentations.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to firmware development standards, coding practices, debugging methodologies, and engineering best practices.
- Can provide technical leadership, drive execution, manage technical risks, and own architecture and feature-level decisions.
Preferred candidate profile
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Electronics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a related discipline.
- Strong hands-on expertise in C programming and embedded firmware development, preferably for storage, controller, or data-center products.
- Proven experience in NVMe, PCIe, SATA/AHCI, RAID, SSD, or storage-controller firmware.
- Strong understanding of low-level firmware development, hardware-software interaction, boot/initialization flows, and embedded architectures.
- Hands-on debugging experience with JTAG, protocol analyzers, logic analyzers, and firmware debugging tools.
- Working knowledge of ARM architecture and embedded controller platforms.
- Exposure to NVMe-MI, MCTP, PLDM, VDM, I2C, UART, and SPI NOR Flash is highly desirable.
- Experience with secure firmware, Root of Trust, secure boot, encryption, SED, and TCG Opal is preferred.
- Experience in firmware validation, defect analysis, root-cause investigation, performance optimization, and protocol compliance.
- Prior experience with enterprise storage, data-center, hyperscale, SSD, RAID, or storage-controller products is strongly preferred.
- Experience with storage technologies/products from organizations such as Marvell, Broadcom, Microchip, Intel, Samsung, Western Digital, Kioxia, or equivalent is an advantage.
- Robust analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to independently debug complex system-level issues.
- Experience working in Agile/multi-disciplinary engineering environments.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with global engineering teams and customer stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience in technical leadership, architecture ownership, mentoring, stakeholder management, and driving projects from requirements through release.
