Role & responsibilities
- Independently create complex 3D models and multi-component assemblies of tube mill/roll forming machine lines in SolidWorks mill stands, roll tooling, forming/sizing sections, welding sections, and auxiliary units
- Read and interpret 2D drawings (customer-supplied, legacy, or vendor drawings) and convert them into fully detailed 3D models/assemblies
- Own the 3D design process end-to-end: concept modeling detailed part design assembly integration interference/clash checking drawing generation
- Use SolidWorks sheet metal, weldment, and assembly tools to model structural frames, fabricated components, and machined parts
- Use standard part libraries (Toolbox/custom component libraries) in designs, and generate, review, and publish accurate BOMs directly from 3D assemblies
- Generate 2D fabrication and GA drawings in AutoCAD from validated 3D models, including tolerances, welding symbols, and BOMs
- Translate customer specifications and process requirements into manufacturable 3D machine designs
- Perform 3D-based design validation (fit, interference, motion/mechanism checks) before drawings are released to production
- Conduct engineering calculations for structural and mechanical components (shafts, bearings, drives, frames)
- Coordinate with production, procurement,
and quality teams to ensure 3D designs are manufacturable and cost-effective
- Review and validate vendor/fabricator drawings against the 3D design intent
- Maintain 3D model libraries, part standardization, and drawing revision control
Preferred candidate profile
- B.E./B.Tech/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 5 to 10 years of design engineering experience, ideally in cold rolling mills, tube mills, or other heavy capital equipment manufacturing
- Demonstrated expertise in SolidWorks 3D modeling must be able to build complex assemblies independently (not just edit existing models); robust command of assemblies, sheet metal, weldments, and top-down/bottom-up design methods
- Solid grasp of 2D drawings, with proven ability to convert 2D drawings into accurate 3D models
- Working proficiency in AutoCAD (2D drafting) for drawing output from 3D models
- Solid understanding of mechanical design principles: GD&T;, tolerancing, material selection, structural design
- Familiarity with rolls, bearings, gearboxes, drive systems, and hydraulic/pneumatic components used in heavy machinery
- Ability to read and interpret customer technical specifications and translate them into 3D models
- Experience preparing BOMs, fabrication drawings, and assembly drawings for shop floor use
