HCL WebSphere Commerce Architect
Level: Architect (contract)
Engagement: Contract
& Qualifications
Job Summary
Own solution architecture for HD Supply’s B2B eCommerce platform across HCL Commerce /
WebSphere Commerce (WCS) v8, Next.js storefront, and Spring Boot services during dual-run. Translate business and product intent into designs that keep the legacy commerce engine healthy while journeys move onto the modern stack. Provide Ready-to-Serve architectural leadership: standards, integration patterns, NFRs, and design review. Hands-on: you will still write and review design artifacts and, as needed, code — this is not a slide-only role.
Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities
- Define and maintain target and transitional architecture for multi-tier B2B commerce: WCS store,
store data, business logic, Commerce tools, Spring Boot APIs, and Next.js / React storefront.
- Lead design of dual-run / strangler patterns: which journeys stay on WCS, which move to Next.js +
services, how routing, session, catalog, cart, and order stay consistent, and how cut-over and rollback work.
- Produce and review solution designs, sequence/integration diagrams, and interface contracts
(REST/SOAP). Identify re-usability, performance, security, and operability issues before build.
- Partner with product, delivery leads, QA, DevOps, and enterprise/integration teams on requirements, data conversion, integration testing, and cut-over.
- Set coding and design standards for Commerce customization, Spring Boot services, and Next.js storefront so squads do not fork three incompatible styles.
- Guide integration with back-end systems (ERP, payments, search, CMS,
punchout / customer purchasing systems) without treating Preview (authoring) and Runtime (customer-facing) Commerce as the same environment.
- Review designs and PRs for Commerce, services, and storefront; unblock the hardest cross-layer defects at root cause.
- Advise on capacity, caching, search, and failure modes for a high-traffic B2B storefront.
- Mentor senior engineers and leads; make architecture decisions explicit (context, options,
consequences) so they survive contractor turnover.
- Identify key barriers and apply structured problem-solving to complex, multi-system situations.
Skills and Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
- 10+ years skilled software engineering; 5+ years in an architect or equivalent principal/staff design role on large commerce or similarly complex multi-tier systems.
- 8+ years expertise in HCL Commerce and/or IBM WebSphere Commerce (WCS) 8.x — store customization, commands/tasks, tools, catalog/order/user/organization flows, and back-end integration. v8 experience is the hiring bar; later Commerce versions are a plus, not a substitute.
- 8+ years Java / J2EE and OOD on large IT systems (WebSphere Application Server strongly preferred).
- 5+ years Spring / Spring MVC with hands-on Spring Boot architecture (service boundaries, APIs,
resilience, auth) — not “Spring on a résumé only.”
- 5+ years web services (REST and SOAP); ability to specify contracts others can implement.
- Next.js and React production architecture experience (routing, data fetching, BFF/API integration,
storefront performance). TypeScript preferred.
- 5+ years source control (Git required).
- Experience architecting B2B commerce (punchout, org/user models, contract/pricing complexity preferred).
- Experience with Agile delivery using Atlassian tools (Jira, Bitbucket/Git, Confluence).
- Excellent written and verbal communication with engineers and non-engineers.
Preferred
- Headless / composable commerce (API-first storefront, BFF, packaged capabilities). MuleSoft or similar iPaaS.
- Search (Solr or equivalent), cache (Redis or equivalent), CMS-driven storefront (Optimizely or equivalent) alongside a commerce engine.
- Cloud (GKE/Kubernetes or equivalent) for storefront and Spring Boot; WAS/IHS for Commerce.
- Security, PCI-adjacent payment flows, and session/identity across legacy and modern storefronts.
- Prior dual-run or large-scale commerce migration.
What this role is not
- Not enterprise architecture detached from Commerce. You must have shipped WCS/HCL Commerce,
not only drawn boxes around it.
- Not a greenfield-only Next.js or Spring Boot architect.
- Not IBM WebSphere Portal or generic Java EE without Commerce.
- Not a people-manager of record (that sits with the Lead / delivery manager); you own technical direction.
