The Role

We are hiring a Software Engineer to build and run the platform our journalism lives on.

Media engineering is unglamorous in a way that matters. A story is worth nothing if the page takes six seconds to load, the search does not find it, or the analytics cannot tell us whether anyone read it. You will own the systems that determine whether our work reaches people: the publishing platform, the delivery layer, the tooling our editors use, and the data behind what we cover.

Most of your work will be backend: services and APIs, the content and data models underneath them, performance and reliability, and integrations across the stack.

There is also a significant research and data side to the role. Covering business and finance well means tracking companies, founders, funding rounds, investors, acquisitions, financial markets, products, and industries over time. That is a data problem as much as an editorial one.

You will work closely with editors. They are your users, and they will tell you plainly when a tool slows them down.

What You Will Do

Build and maintain the backend services and APIs behind the Finance Times publishing platform.

Own site performance, from page speed and caching to how content is delivered.

Build the internal tools editors and researchers use to research, write, publish, and manage coverage.





Design and maintain the data models behind our coverage of companies, founders, investors, funding rounds, acquisitions, industries, and financial markets.

Build systems that help organize, structure, and track business and financial data over time.

Build analytics and reporting that show what is being read, how readers discover our work, and what content is performing.

Integrate external services, APIs, data sources, and platforms.

Build and maintain reliable data pipelines that improve our research and editorial workflows.

Own quality through tests, code review, monitoring, and debugging production issues.

Contribute to architecture decisions and document them clearly.

Improve reliability, scalability, security, and maintainability across the platform.

What You Will Need

2 to 5 years of professional software engineering experience, with production systems you have shipped and maintained.

Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, databases, and software design.

Proficiency in Python, JavaScript or TypeScript, Java, Go, or a comparable modern language.

Solid backend experience, including REST APIs, databases, and server-side frameworks.

Experience designing and working with relational and structured data models.

Fluency with Git and collaborative development workflows.

Strong debugging instincts and the discipline to write code someone else can understand and maintain.

Clear communication with people who are not engineers, since your users will often be editors and researchers.

The self-direction to work effectively on a distributed team.

A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have





Experience with a content management system, publishing platform, news product, or media company.

Web performance experience, including caching, CDN configuration, Core Web Vitals, and technical SEO.

Search and retrieval experience, including full-text search, indexing, ranking, or recommendation systems.

Analytics instrumentation, event tracking, and reporting pipelines.

Experience building or maintaining data pipelines.

Experience working with large, structured, or continuously updated datasets.

Cloud experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure, along with Docker and CI/CD.

Experience integrating third-party APIs and external data sources.

Applications built using LLMs for search, summarization, research, classification, data extraction, or editorial tooling.

Remote, based in India. You choose where you work from.

Compensation is ₹12,00,000 to ₹18,00,000 per annum, based on experience and demonstrated engineering ability.
