We are seeking a senior Performance Engineering Architect to lead enterprise performance strategy across products and platforms, ensuring applications are scalable, resilient, observable, and ready to support business growth.
This role combines hands-on technical depth with architectural leadership, covering performance testing, profiling, cloud and distributed systems, database performance, observability, and team mentorship.
The successful candidate will partner with Engineering, Architecture, Product, and Operations teams to lead the Engineering NFR certification team across all IBS products to define standards, identify bottlenecks, guide optimization, and establish performance engineering as a strategic capability.
Key Responsibilities:
Performance Engineering Strategy & Architecture
- Define and drive enterprise-wide Performance Engineering strategy, frameworks, standards, and best practices.
- Establish performance requirements, NFRs, SLIs, SLOs, and performance acceptance criteria in collaboration with architects and business stakeholders.
- Design and govern performance testing approaches across load, stress, spike, endurance, scalability, capacity, and benchmark testing.
- Identify performance bottlenecks across application, database, API, middleware, infrastructure, and cloud layers.
- Provide architectural recommendations to improve scalability, throughput, latency, resiliency, resource utilization, and system performance.
- Drive shift-left performance engineering practices throughout the SDLC.
Performance Testing & Engineering
- Create realistic workload models based on production traffic patterns and critical business transactions.
- Lead execution of enterprise-scale performance tests and capacity planning exercises.
- Analyze test results and correlate application performance with infrastructure, database, and platform metrics.
- Establish performance baselines and proactively identify performance regressions.
Mandatory experience with one or more of the following tools:
- Apache JMeter
- LoadRunner
- Gatling
- Equivalent enterprise performance testing platforms
Preferred:
- Distributed performance testing
- Cloud-based load generation platforms
Application Performance Analysis & Troubleshooting
- Perform deep-dive application performance investigations and root-cause analysis.
- Identify and resolve performance issues including CPU bottlenecks, memory leaks, garbage collection issues, thread contention, connection pool exhaustion, slow methods, blocking calls, and resource leaks.
- Analyze JVM and application-level performance metrics.
- Review thread dumps, heap dumps, GC logs, and diagnostic information.
- Review HAR files and identify front-end performance issues.
- Work closely with development teams to identify and resolve application-level bottlenecks.
- Identify inefficient API interaction patterns and excessive client-server calls.
Desired Profiling Tools Experience:
- Java Flight Recorder (JFR)
- Java Mission Control
- VisualVM
- JProfiler
Database Performance Engineering
- Review and analyze database performance issues including slow SQL, inefficient query patterns, execution plans, indexing gaps, connection pool constraints, locking, blocking, CPU/I/O utilization, long-running transactions, and contention.
- Partner with Database Administrators and Engineering teams to optimize database performance and scalability.
Observability & Performance Monitoring
- Use observability and monitoring platforms to analyze application and infrastructure performance.
- Monitor and analyze response time, throughput, error rate, CPU, memory, disk I/O, network utilization, JVM metrics, and database metrics.
- Leverage observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, and the EFK stack to support performance analysis and operational insight.
Cloud & Distributed Systems Performance
- Strong understanding of AWS architecture and performance characteristics.
- Analyze and optimize Kafka, event-driven systems, distributed and microservices architectures, caching layers, and cloud-native platforms.
- Ensure systems are scalable, resilient, and performance optimized.
Performance Automation & CI/CD
- Integrate performance testing into CI/CD pipelines.
- Define and implement automated performance regression testing approaches.
- Establish performance baselines and continuous validation processes.
- Drive continuous performance monitoring and improvement initiatives.
Stakeholder Management & Communication The candidate must demonstrate exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills and be able to:
- Communicate complex performance issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Present findings, risks, and recommendations to architects, engineering leadership, and customers.
- Demonstrate strong analytical problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Take ownership and drive critical performance issues through to resolution.
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Performance Engineers.
- Provide technical leadership and review performance engineering deliverables.
- Build reusable frameworks, standards, accelerators, and best practices.
- Establish and mature the organization's Performance Engineering capability.
- Collaborate with architects, engineering leaders, product teams, and operations teams to drive performance excellence.
Required Qualifications
- 12+ years of overall IT experience.
- Minimum 5+ years of hands-on Performance Engineering experience.
- Experience in a Performance Engineering Architect, Lead, or Management role.
- Strong expertise in performance testing, profiling, troubleshooting, and optimization.
- Experience working with large-scale enterprise, distributed, and high-transaction systems.
- Hands-on experience with JMeter, LoadRunner, Gatling, or equivalent performance testing platforms.
- Strong understanding of application architecture, APIs, databases, JVM internals, and cloud platforms.
- Experience with up-to-date observability and monitoring platforms.
- Excellent communication, leadership, stakeholder management, and analytical skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- IT Background with Performance Engineering skills
- Experience working in large-scale SaaS and microservices environments.
- Experience establishing or leading a Performance Engineering Center of Excellence (CoE).
- AWS certifications or equivalent cloud expertise.
- Knowledge of SRE practices, reliability engineering, and capacity planning.
- Experience building performance engineering frameworks, automation platforms, and reusable assets.
