Company Description PublicPast: Journal of Public History is an independent online history journal committed to making rigorous, evidence-based historical research accessible to a broad public audience. Founded in 2025 under Histora Publications, the journal publishes original articles, essays, editorials, reviews, and long-form features on people, events, ideas, and movements that have shaped societies worldwide. Its coverage spans ancient, medieval, early modern, and contemporary history, with particular attention to South Asia and global historical perspectives.
PublicPast : Journal of Public History aims to bridge academic scholarship and public understanding by presenting well-sourced, intellectually honest work in transparent and engaging language. As an open-access digital publication, it welcomes contributions from historians, researchers, educators, and writers who value historical accuracy, critical inquiry, and thoughtful public engagement.
Role Description The Peer Reviewer role at PublicPast : Journal of Public History, is a part-time, remote position.
The Peer
Reviewer will critically evaluate submitted manuscripts for methodological soundness, use of primary and secondary sources, historical accuracy, and contribution to public understanding of history. Day-to-day responsibilities include reading and assessing articles, providing detailed written feedback to authors, recommending revisions, and advising on the suitability of manuscripts for publication.
The role also involves collaborating with editors to maintain the journal’s standards of clarity, accessibility, and intellectual integrity, as well as participating in editorial meetings and contributing to the development of review guidelines. Peer Reviewers are expected to stay current with historical scholarship in their areas of expertise and support the journal’s mission of connecting academic research with a wider audience.
Qualifications
- Strong training in history or related fields, with demonstrated expertise in one or more periods or regions (e.g., South Asian history, global history, ancient, medieval, early modern, or contemporary history).
- Ability to critically evaluate research design, source usage, argumentation, and historiographical context in historical writing.
- Excellent analytical, written, and editorial skills, including the capacity to provide clear, constructive, and respectful feedback.
- Commitment to evidence-based scholarship, intellectual honesty, and accessibility in public-facing historical work.
- Master’s degree or PhD in History, Public History, or a closely related discipline (or equivalent research experience) preferred.
- Familiarity with academic publishing standards, peer review processes, and ethical guidelines in historical research.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple manuscripts and meet review deadlines.
- Experience in public history, education, or writing for non-specialist audiences is an asset.
