Role Description The Patent Specialist will be responsible for managing patent-related activities for medical research outputs, devices, methods, and innovations developed through the Centre’s work. This full-time remote role includes identifying patentable aspects of research, conducting preliminary patentability assessments, and preparing and filing patent applications in alignment with applicable jurisdictions.
The Patent
Specialist will collaborate closely with doctors, researchers, and external legal partners to draft patent specifications, claims, and supporting documentation.
Day-to-day responsibilities include tracking prosecution timelines, responding to office actions, maintaining organized patent portfolios, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and institutional policies. The role also involves advising stakeholders on intellectual property strategy, risk, and best practices to protect research outcomes while supporting publication goals.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of patent processes, including Patent Applications and Patent Preparation, with the ability to draft clear and defensible specifications and claims.
- Understanding of Patent Law and Patent Prosecution, including experience coordinating with patent offices and responding to office actions.
- Ability to perform Patentability assessments and prior art searches to evaluate and strengthen the intellectual property position of medical research innovations.
- Relevant academic background such as a degree in law, intellectual property, biomedical engineering, life sciences, or a related field.
- Prior experience working with medical, pharmaceutical, or healthcare-related patents is highly beneficial.
- Excellent analytical, written, and communication skills, with attention to detail and the ability to explain complex IP concepts to non-specialists.
- Comfort working in a remote, collaborative environment with clinicians and researchers across time zones.
- Professional certifications in patent practice (e.g., patent agent or attorney registration) are an advantage.
