About the Role
We are building in-house UAV gimbal systems and are looking for a Motor Control Firmware Engineer to develop the motor-control firmware stack for compact UAV gimbals.
You will work closely with electronics, mechanical, and controls engineers and own the motor-control firmware throughout the product development cycle from initial hardware bring-up and motor calibration to diagnostics, validation, and product qualification.
The role focuses on low-speed, high-precision BLDC motor control for gimbal applications, where smooth and stable motion, accurate rotor-position feedback, low torque ripple, and reliable real-time performance are critical.
Key Responsibilities
● Develop real-time embedded firmware for UAV gimbal motor-control systems
● Design and implement BLDC motor-control algorithms, including commutation strategies, Field-Oriented Control (FOC), and cascaded current, velocity and position control loops
● Implement PWM generation and closed-loop motor control using Hall sensors or magnetic encoders for precise low-speed motion
● Bring up and validate motor controller hardware and firmware, including power stages, gate drivers, current sensing, sensor feedback and motor integration
● Develop firmware features for motor calibration, characterisation and parameter identification, control-loop tuning, telemetry, diagnostics and protection
● Implement communication interfaces between the gimbal, UAV flight-control systems, payload interfaces and ground-control systems
● Support firmware testing, system integration, qualification and UAV flight testing, while maintaining version-controlled firmware and relevant documentation
Required Skills
● Robust proficiency in embedded C/C++ for STM32 or ARM Cortex-M real-time systems,
including peripherals such as interrupts, timers, PWM, ADC and DMA.
● Experience with BLDC motor control, including commutation, FOC, current sensing and rotor-position feedback using Hall sensors or magnetic encoders
● Understanding of PID control, control-loop tuning and real-time motor-control implementation, including control-loop timing, interrupt latency and synchronised PWM/ADC operation
● Working knowledge of motor drivers, power stages, gate drivers, current sensing and analogue signal conditioning
● Experience with RTOS-based firmware development, hardware bring-up and debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analysers and hardware debuggers
● Hands-on experience with MCU communication interfaces, including SPI, I2C, UART and CAN
Good to Have
● Experience with BLDC motor-control frameworks or open-source platforms for gimbals, ESCs, robotic actuators or industrial servo systems
● Experience with motor calibration, characterisation, parameter identification or automated control-loop tuning
● Experience integrating distributed embedded systems using CAN, Ethernet and other fieldbus or distributed communication protocols
● Experience with IMU integration, sensor fusion, motion estimation and disturbance rejection for gimbal stabilization and control
● Understanding of motor and actuator dynamics relevant to precision motion control, including inertia, friction, torque ripple, cogging and mechanical disturbances
Education & Experience
● Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
●1–5 years of experience in embedded firmware, with demonstrable hands-on work in motor control, BLDC motor systems, gimbals, robotics, UAVs, or related electromechanical systems.
