CREATIVE VIDEO EDITOR
About Jotter Journals
Jotter Journals is a self-development and lifestyle brand built around helping people become more intentional about the way they live, think, and grow.
Content is a core part of the brand. The goal is to create videos that are not only visually compelling, but also emotionally resonant, culturally relevant, highly shareable, and instantly recognizable as Jotter Journals.
As the brand grows, the content team will play a significant role in shaping how Jotter Journals looks, feels, and communicates online.
We are looking for a Creative Video Editor who wants to be deeply involved in that process.
About the Role
This is not a conventional video editing role.
The expectation is not simply to take footage, add captions, put together B-roll, and deliver a finished Reel.
The Creative Video Editor will be responsible for helping develop the creative language of Jotter Journals’ content — from how an idea should be produced and shot to how it should ultimately be edited and presented.
Editing will be at the heart of the role.
The ideal candidate understands that a great edit is not about adding more effects. It is about knowing what to show, what to remove, when to slow down, when to create tension, when to introduce text, when to use silence, when to use sound, and how to keep someone watching until the very end.
This role requires someone with strong creative instincts, excellent visual taste, a deep understanding of content, and the ability to work independently.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
01 — Develop the visual language of the brand
Work closely with the team to establish a consistent and recognizable visual identity across video content.
This includes developing and refining:
Typography and text treatments
Caption systems
Motion graphics
Transitions
B-roll language
Sound design
Music selection
Pacing
Visual effects
Color treatment
Graphic elements
Recurring visual formats
Overall editing aesthetic The objective is to build a distinctive editing language, rather than producing content that simply follows whatever editing trend is currently popular.
02 — Take creative ownership of every edit
Every piece of content should be approached with the question:
“How can this be made better?”
The editor should independently make decisions around:
Pacing
Story structure
Hook delivery
Visual hierarchy
Text placement
B-roll
Pattern interrupts
Sound design
Music
Transitions
Visual storytelling
Emotional build-up
Ending/payoff The expectation is that the editor will bring ideas to the table, challenge existing ideas when necessary, and continuously look for ways to make the content stronger.
03 — Understand self-development and lifestyle content
Jotter Journals operates within the broader self-development, personal growth, lifestyle, mindset, relationships, ambition, and modern adulthood space.
The ideal candidate should genuinely consume content within these categories.
They should understand
The creators shaping the space The formats audiences respond to
Emerging content styles
Storytelling trends
What makes certain videos relatable
What makes content shareable
Why certain hooks work
Why certain edits retain attention
How visual storytelling can make an idea more emotionally powerful
Being someone who naturally consumes and analyzes this type of content is a major part of the role.
04 — Understand why content works The ability to edit is only one part of the job.
The editor should be able to look at a successful piece of content and understand why it worked.
This includes having an instinct for:
Hooks
Retention
Curiosity
Storytelling
Emotional payoff
Pattern interruption
Pacing
Visual stimulation
Sound
Shareability
Rewatchability
Cultural relevance The goal is not to copy successful content.
The goal is to understand the principles behind what makes content successful and translate those principles into the Jotter Journals brand.
05 — Contribute before the editing process begins
Creative involvement should not begin when footage lands in the editing software.
The ideal editor will contribute to the production process itself.
For example
How should this concept be shot?
What footage will be required?
What B-roll should be captured?
What visual moments could strengthen the story?
Should this be a direct-to-camera video, cinematic piece, montage, or another format?
Where should text appear?
What should the first three seconds look like?
How can the concept become a repeatable content format?
What can make this piece feel different from everything else in the niche?
The editor should be able to think from concept → production → edit → final piece.
The Person We’re Looking For
Strong creative instincts
You have taste.
You notice details other people don’t.
You understand composition, typography, pacing, music, sound, movement, and visual storytelling.
You know when something feels polished, when something feels generic, and when something simply isn’t working.
Highly proactive
This is one of the most important qualities for the role.
There will be no hand-holding.
The expectation is not to wait for instructions on every decision.
If you see an opportunity to improve something, you act on it.
If you have an idea, you bring it forward.
If you discover a new format, editing technique, creator, trend, or visual reference that could strengthen the brand, you share it.
If something isn’t working, you identify the problem and propose a solution.
Comfortable working independently
Given a clear objective, the editor should be able to independently determine the best way to execute it.
The expectation is to work from:
“Here is what we want the audience to feel.”
rather than:
“Here are 25 individual instructions for how to make the video.”
Strong judgment and independent decision-making are essential.
Naturally curious about content The ideal candidate is someone who naturally watches Reels, TikToks, YouTube, creator content, documentaries, advertisements,
and other forms of visual storytelling — and constantly asks:
Why did this work?
Why did I keep watching?
Why was that transition placed there?
Why did that piece of text appear at that exact moment?
Why did that video feel different?
That curiosity should translate directly into the work.

Software
Proficiency in Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, or equivalent tools is welcome.

Creative thinking, taste, storytelling, and execution matter more than the specific software being used.
What Matters Most
- Creative taste
- Storytelling ability
- Initiative
- Understanding of content and culture
- Editing ability
- Attention to detail
- Technical proficiency
Technical skills can continue to develop.
Creative judgment, curiosity, and initiative are much harder to teach.
This Role Is Not For You If…
You only want to execute exactly what you’re given.
You need detailed instructions for every edit.
You don’t actively consume content.
You aren’t interested in understanding why content performs.
You see editing as purely technical work.
You aren’t comfortable sharing creative opinions.
You wait to be told what to improve.
You aren’t comfortable experimenting.
You prefer repetitive editing over creative problem-solving.
You don’t naturally pay attention to visual details.
This Role Is For You If…
You watch content and instinctively analyze why it works.
You save videos because you want to understand how they were made.
You notice typography, pacing, sound design, transitions, framing, and B-roll without consciously trying to.
You have strong opinions about what looks valuable.
You constantly think of ways content could be better.
You enjoy experimenting.
You don’t need someone to tell you what to do at every step.
And most importantly, you want to help build something, rather than simply complete assigned edits.
How to Apply
Please send
- Your portfolio
- 3–5 pieces of work you’re most proud of
- A short explanation of why you think those pieces worked
- Any relevant experience with creators, brands, or content teams
- Your availability and expected compensation
Important: Please don’t send only a portfolio.
We want to understand how you think, not just what you can technically edit.
