As a part of GE's extensive global network, GE Vernova offers a dynamic work environment that encourages professional growth and collaboration across regions and disciplines.

About The Role

As a Lead Engineer – Control & Protection at GE Vernova Grid Solutions, you will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and optimizing protection relay systems for extra-high voltage (EHV) and high voltage (HV) substations. Your expertise will ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of power transmission systems across various regions globally. The role involves leading secondary engineering activities, including control and protection schemes, substation automation systems, interface engineering, telecom requirements, and low-voltage auxiliary systems for a broad spectrum of substation types such as AIS, GIS, HVDC, FACTS, STATCOM, and renewable energy installations, both onshore and offshore.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary workgroups to meet project objectives within defined parameters, applying your technical knowledge to resolve issues of moderate complexity. Coordination with the GSI Global Engineering Center and regional teams will be essential to ensure seamless project execution. This position offers a challenging opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure projects that support the global energy transition and grid modernization efforts.

Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, complemented by at least 8 years of relevant experience in substation protection relay systems within the EHV electrical or power transmission industries. Proven experience in EPC environments involving multidisciplinary teams is essential. Candidates should have extensive knowledge of secondary engineering for substations up to 765kV/400kV/220kV and HVDC systems, including experience with relay testing, equipment testing, and commissioning of protection schemes.

Familiarity with relay testing tools, automation software, and database management in SAS or RTU systems will be advantageous. Additionally, experience working with various protection relay brands and IEDs is preferred.

Responsibilities

- Design and prepare detailed engineering drawings such as Single Line Diagrams (SLD), Cable Layout Diagrams (KLD), and Panel Schematic Layout Diagrams (PSLD) using E-CAD tools like Engineering Base, E-Plan, or AutoCAD Electrical for substations up to 765kV.
- Develop and review substation automation systems based on IEC61850 standards, ensuring proper interconnections and integration with control systems.
- Review Bill of Quantities (BOQ) and network drawings related to PLCC and FOTE engineering, ensuring seamless interfacing between communication and control systems.
- Inspect and validate equipment drawings for major substation components such as circuit breakers, isolators, transformers, and associated monitoring devices for AIS and GIS substations.
- Perform current transformer (CT) and voltage transformer (VT) sizing calculations to ensure accurate protection and measurement.

- Design and review control and power cable engineering for substations, ensuring compliance with project specifications.
- Develop and validate low-voltage auxiliary systems, ensuring proper interfacing with SCADA and SAS systems.
- Perform protection relay application, setting calculations, and coordination studies, including tripping and fault analysis to optimize system reliability and safety.
- Coordinate with project teams to ensure timely and accurate delivery of engineering documentation and deliverables.

Additional competencies include supporting renewable energy projects such as solar, wind, and battery storage, as well as HVDC and FACTS integrated systems. You will also review electrical power system studies, load flow, and short-circuit analyses, utilizing specialized tools like ETAP, CANECO, or DIgSILENT PowerFactory. Working with various relay manufacturers and troubleshooting database issues in automation systems will be part of your responsibilities.
