Interpret Blueprints: Read engineering drawings, sketches, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T;) symbols.
Calculate Dimensions: Use shop mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry to determine cutting angles and material allowances.
Machine Parts: Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, drill presses, and surface grinders.
Measure Accurately: Inspect finished work using manual tools like micrometers, dial indicators, vernier calipers, and thread gauges.
Select Tooling: Choose the correct cutting speeds, feed rates, and high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide tools for each material type.
Custom Fabrication: Create one-off custom parts, prototypes,
or repair obsolete components without existing computer programs.
Specific Qualifications & Traits
Experience: Typically requires 1–3+ years of hands-on manual machining experience.
Spatial Reasoning: Solid ability to visualize three-dimensional parts from flat paper drawings.
