Role Purpose

The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) is responsible for providing basic patient care and support services under the supervision of nurses and clinicians to ensure patient comfort, safety, hygiene, and wellbeing. The role supports effective delivery of quality healthcare services by assisting in routine clinical and non-clinical activities while maintaining patient dignity and hospital standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. PATIENT'S CARE:

- Receives and gives report about patient and assignment at each bedside during change of shifts.
- Lifts & shifts patient as per the need of department.
- Receives patient in unit to the bed, assembles charts and places/checks patient identification
- Health Assessment:
- Checking height and weight of the patient
- Collection of specimen for urine, stool routine and 24 hrs urine collection.
- Uses dipstick method for testing urine PH, urine ketone, albumin, RBC and sugar under supervision of staff nurse.
- Checking blood glucose level using glucometer under supervision of staff nurse.

2. HYGIENE & COMFORT :

- Prepares open bed/unoccupied/occupied/post-operative bed/cardiac bed.
- Gives sponge bath, bathroom hair wash, oral care, back care, pressure point care, nail care, foot care, sitz bath, perineal care and in general attends to patient’s personal hygiene.
- Assists in changing surgical drainages.
- Assists in dressings and reports observations.
- Shaves & prepares patients for surgery/investigations.
- Gives steam, nebulization.
- Observes patient's skin colour, condition, and reports.

3. ELIMINATION :

- Gives and removes bedpans, urinals, sputum mug, kidney trays and cleans patient.
- Assists patient to commode or bathroom.
- Changes urinary bags, condom drainages




- Applies hot and cold fermentation pads/packs/tepid/cold sponge bath.
- Gives enemas & rectal suppositories and reports results to staff nurse or team leader.
- Changes diaper.

4. SAFETY :

- Transports patient within hospital and in ambulance for treatment, procedure or in
- Attends patient call bells.
- Assists with ambulation.
- Assists in changing patient's position and maintaining traction.

5. INVENTORY,EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES:

- Checks stock of disposable /supplies reports needs to Team leader/Nurse manager.
- Obtains supplies and after use resend to CSSD department.
- Checks inventory of dressing trolley and maintains ready to use always.
- Responsible for linen issue to patient services & maintaining inventory of linen in their respective departments.
