New Relic Engineer L3 (Observability & Platform Engineering)

Role Summary

This is a strategic engineering role responsible for designing, implementing, and enhancing enterprise-wide observability using the New Relic platform.

The role requires a solid combination of:

Technical expertise in monitoring and observability
Architecture-level thinking
Ability to resolve complex issues and drive improvements

The engineer will act as a key contributor in improving system visibility, reliability, and performance across infrastructure and applications.

Experience Requirements
8+ years in Infrastructure / Monitoring / Observability domain
Hands-on New Relic experience in production environments
Experience handling enterprise-scale monitoring environments

Technical Skills

Strong expertise in New Relic platform:
APM, Infrastructure, Logs, Alerts, Dashboards
Experience with NRQL query development

Knowledge of observability concepts:

Metrics, logs, traces, SLIs / SLOs
Experience in troubleshooting log ingestion and monitoring issues
Understanding of distributed systems and application monitoring
Not just tool administration, but platform engineering
Ability to think beyond incidents and improve overall visibility
Drive observability as a core capability, not just monitoring
Act as a subject matter expert and advisor for monitoring strategy

Key Responsibilities

1. Observability Engineering & Platform Ownership

Design and implement end-to-end observability solutions covering:
Metrics, logs, traces, and events
Define and maintain observability standards across applications and infrastructure
Ensure full visibility of production systems to support proactive monitoring

New Relic Implementation & Optimization

Configure and manage Current Relic components:
APM, Infrastructure Monitoring, Logs, Dashboards, Alerts
Build meaningful dashboards for engineering and leadership visibility
Write and optimize NRQL queries for deep data analysis

Improve alert quality to reduce noise and improve signal

3. Issue Resolution & Root Cause Analysis

Investigate log ingestion issues, performance issues, and monitoring gaps
Perform end-to-end troubleshooting:
Source -> agent -> ingestion -> visualization
Support major incidents with data-driven diagnostics
Drive faster issue identification and resolution

4. Platform Governance & Standardisation

Define best practices for:
Monitoring onboarding
Alert configuration
Log ingestion standards
Ensure consistency across environments and services
Maintain documentation and governance frameworks

5. Device Onboarding & Coverage Improvement

Drive onboarding of servers, applications, and infra components into New Relic
Track and improve observability coverage across estate
Identify gaps where systems are not monitored or partially visible

6. License & Usage Management

Monitor data ingestion and license usage
Provide visibility into:
Usage consumption
Available capacity
Optimize data usage to avoid overconsumption and waste

7. Cross-Team Collaboration
Enable teams to adopt better observability practices
Support onboarding and troubleshooting activities

8. Continuous Improvement & Innovation

Identify and implement advanced New Relic capabilities:
AI-based alerting
Anomaly detection
Distributed tracing
Advanced dashboards
Drive observability maturity across the organisation
