PURPOSE

The Observability Lead is accountable for establishing and scaling Woodside's enterprise Observability capability, governance, technology roadmap, providing leadership across monitoring, observability, reliability engineering and operational analytics ensuring long term maturity to improve the reliability, resilience and performance of business-critical digital services.

The role will define enterprise standards, governance frameworks and onboarding models while driving the adoption of observability practices across applications, infrastructure, cloud and operationally critical environments.

Working closely with Infrastructure, ServiceNow, application and operations teams, the role will transform telemetry and operational data into actionable insights that improve early detection, incident response, service health, automation and continual service improvement.

The role requires strong technical leadership, a hands-on approach, and a culture of safety, accountability, high ownership, collaboration and operational excellence.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Lead the Enterprise Observability capability, building a sustainable enterprise capability focused on governance, application onboarding, operational analytics, automation and measurable reliability outcomes.
- Own the Enterprise Observability strategy, capability roadmap and maturity plan, ensuring alignment with Digital priorities and long-term business objectives
- Develop business cases,



secure executive sponsorship and drive strategic investments that improve reliability, automation, operational intelligence and business outcomes.
- Influence senior stakeholders, Digital Leadership Teams and service owners to drive enterprise adoption, capability maturity and measurable value realization.
- Own capability financial performance including budgeting, forecasting, OPEX management, licensing optimization and investment planning.
- Lead vendor governance, commercial performance reviews, contract optimisation and platform consumption management to maximise business value and cost efficiency.
- Drive the adoption of Reliability Engineering practices including Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), Error Budgets, Operational Readiness Reviews and continual service improvement.
- Provide operational leadership, assurance and execution for the Observability service capability, aligning delivery, performance, people and continual improvement with Digital Operations priorities and enterprise service reliability goals.
- Define and govern observability standards across Application Performance, Network performance monitoring, ServiceNow event management, SLOs, naming, tagging, dashboards, alert severity, runbooks and service ownership models.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Experience

- 10 to 15 years of experience in IT Operations, Observability, Site Reliability Engineering, Platform Engineering, Infrastructure Operations, Application Operations, Event Management or enterprise monitoring environments.
- Demonstrated experience leading an enterprise technology capability implementing, scaling and governing enterprise observability capabilities, including platform standards, onboarding frameworks and modern agent based/server less observability platforms such as Dynatrace, Azure Monitor, AWS CloudWatch, Grafana, New Relic and OpenTelemetry.
- Experience managing technology budgets, vendor relationships, licensing consumption and commercial performanceProven ability to influence Digital Leadership Teams, secure funding through business cases, manage technology investments and vendor partnerships, and drive large-scale operational and technology transformation initiatives.
- Strong hands-on experience with Dynatrace including OneAgent, dashboards, alerts, management zones, synthetic monitoring, service flow, distributed tracing, problem detection, Davis AI, tagging, SLOs and alerting profiles.
- Strong working knowledge of ServiceNow ITOM Event Management including event ingestion, event rules, correlation, deduplication, enrichment, service mapping awareness and incident integration.
- Experience integrating monitoring platforms with ITSM systems, event management tooling, CMDB, resolver groups and operational workflows.
- Strong understanding of observability concepts including metrics,



logs, traces, events, topology, service maps, synthetic monitoring, service health, full-stack monitoring and business transaction monitoring.
- Experience supporting cloud and hybrid environments such as Azure, AWS, VMware, Windows, Linux, databases, middleware, APIs, enterprise applications and infrastructure platforms.
- Experience defining monitoring standards, onboarding frameworks, alert quality rules, dashboard patterns, runbooks, service health views and operational reporting.
- Experience developing automation using Python, PowerShell, REST APIs, shell scripting, YAML / JSON, CI/CD pipelines, source control and infrastructure-as-code or observability-as-code practices.
- Experience working with application owners and technology teams to onboard critical services, map dependencies, establish SLOs and improve operational readiness.
- Experience analyzing operational data to improve MTTR, incident quality, alert volume, event quality, monitoring coverage, service availability and performance outcomes.
- Experience leading technical teams, influencing cross-functional stakeholders and working across global delivery, managed service provider and enterprise support models.
- Understanding of ITIL processes, especially Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Management, Event Management, Request Management and continual service improvement.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify monitoring gaps, alert quality issues, event flow problems, integration defects and recurring operational pain points.
- Demonstrated ability to operate in complex enterprise environments and balance operational urgency, governance, business impact, cyber/safety risk and continuous improvement.
- Experience supporting operationally critical environments with awareness of dependencies across IT, Operational Technology (OT), telecommunications and digital ecosystems.
- Experience or strong awareness of Oil & Gas operations, including business-critical, process-critical and safety-conscious digital environments, is preferred.
