Who Are We
ThinkMetal is a VC-backed startup focused on advanced materials innovation for manufacturing, with a strong emphasis on metal and alloy systems for additive manufacturing. We operate at the intersection of materials science, hardware, and process engineering, building integrated solutions that translate material capabilities into scalable, production-ready systems.
Our work spans metal and alloy development, feedstock engineering, and manufacturing setup design, enabling high performance, reliable, and repeatable industrial processes. We focus on taking materials from lab scale understanding to real world manufacturing deployment, particularly for metal based applications.
As part of the team, you will work in a highly hands-on environment with direct exposure to end-to-end product and process development, from concept and experimentation to production implementation
Role Overview
A Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the complete mechanical development of a product throughout its lifecycle—from understanding customer and business requirements to concept creation, detailed design, prototype development, testing, manufacturing support, and continuous product improvement. The engineer ensures that every component and assembly is functional, reliable, manufacturable, cost-effective, and compliant with industry standard
Key responsibilities
- Design mechanical components, assemblies, and complete products using CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, NX, etc.).
- Develop concepts based on product requirements and customer needs.
- Create detailed 2D manufacturing drawings with GD&T; and tolerances.
- Perform DFMA (Design for Manufacturing & Assembly) to optimize cost and manufacturability.
- Select appropriate materials, manufacturing processes, and standard components.
- Design sheet metal, machined, welded, cast, and 3D-printed parts.
- Build and evaluate prototypes; validate designs through testing and design reviews.
- Conduct engineering calculations, tolerance stack-up analysis, and basic FEA where required.
- Prepare and maintain BOMs, ECNs/ECOs, technical documentation, and revision control.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, procurement, quality, electrical, and application engineering teams.
- Resolve production and assembly issues through root cause analysis and design improvements.
- Coordinate with vendors for fabrication, tooling, and component development.
- Ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety regulations, and quality requirements.
- Support product installation, commissioning, and field issue resolution when required.
- Drive continuous product improvement through value engineering and cost reduction initiatives
