Role Overview

We are looking for a Software Development Support Engineer to support application testing and troubleshooting as part of a SQL Server 2025 migration project. The resource will work closely with the development team to identify and test existing production applications in the new SQL Server 2025 environment. The role involves installing and executing custom-developed applications, identifying errors, troubleshooting compatibility and dependency issues, and documenting findings and solutions.

The resource will have limited access to the production environment and will primarily work with development and test environments.

Key Responsibilities

- Work with the development team to gather an inventory of current production applications, stored procedures, and APIs.
- Gather and execute test cases provided by the development team.
- Install and configure custom-developed applications created using various versions of Visual Studio.
- Test applications currently running in the SQL Server 2016 environment against the recent SQL Server 2025 environment.
- Execute applications and document application, database, connectivity, and compatibility errors.
- Open Visual Studio applications and debug issues to identify specific errors.
- Access and analyze SQL Server logs to identify errors and troubleshoot stored procedure failures.
- Work with development team members to identify software dependency and compatibility issues.
- Determine the root cause of application failures and assist in identifying and documenting appropriate solutions.
- Identify and report potential database migration issues related to logins, users, roles, permissions, credentials, linked servers, SQL Agent jobs, operators, alerts, Database Mail, proxies, SSIS, SSRS dependencies, certificates, encryption keys,



endpoints, and server-level configurations.
- Perform application connectivity testing, including DNS, TCP connectivity, authentication, SQL connections, application connection pools, and connection timeout behavior.
- Perform application functionality testing, including login, read operations, inserts, updates, deletes, reports, batch processes, scheduled processes, interfaces, imports, exports, file processing, and notifications.
- Compare application and SQL performance between SQL Server 2016 and the new SQL environment, including query performance, blocking, deadlocks, CPU, memory, disk latency, and application response time.
- Document impacts, issues, and workarounds related to third-party applications and external users, including IBM Cognos and MasterWholesale.
- Assist Resource 1 with application testing in the newly created development environment after migration is completed.
- Assist with testing applications against increased SQL database compatibility levels.
- Maintain clear documentation of test results, errors, root causes, impacts, workarounds, and resolutions.

Required Experience and Skills

- Experience supporting or testing custom-developed software applications.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Visual Studio applications and application debugging.
- Experience troubleshooting applications interacting with Microsoft SQL Server.
- Strong understanding of SQL Server environments and database connectivity.
- Ability to access and analyze SQL Server logs to troubleshoot application and stored procedure failures.
- Experience identifying software dependency, compatibility, and configuration issues.
- Understanding of SQL Server migration-related components and configurations.
- Experience with application testing, troubleshooting, and documenting defects.
- Ability to work closely with developers and technical teams to identify root causes and implement solutions.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.
