Your Role at a Glance The Software Engineer III serves as the senior technical resource for Mastercam's customer-facing WordPress environment and leads the design and delivery of its ecommerce capability. This role independently architects complex solutions, including custom plugin development, payment processing integration, and custom purchase and fulfillment workflows, and is expected to make sound design and platform decisions with limited oversight. The position provides technical direction and mentorship to less experienced engineers and conducts code reviews across the team.

Success in this role requires deep WordPress expertise combined with substantial ecommerce and broader web application experience.

How You’ll Drive Success

Ecommerce Solution Design & Development

- Leads the technical design and delivery of the ecommerce solution within the WordPress setting, including catalog, checkout, payment processing integration, and custom purchase and fulfillment workflows.
- Architects and develops custom WordPress plugins, themes, and extensions to deliver business functionality that is not available through existing solutions.
- Designs and builds integrations between the WordPress environment and internal systems and third-party services, including API design and data modeling.
- Translates business and compliance requirements provided by internal stakeholders into technical designs, and implements them so that the resulting behavior is testable and auditable.

Platform Development & Maintenance

- Designs, develops, and tests software to resolve defects and implement user stories.
- Maintains and updates the existing codebase to address technical debt and legacy code; identifies areas of the system that require updating and writes user stories as appropriate.
- Evaluates and recommends tools, technologies, and processes for software development, including alternative platforms where the current approach will not meet requirements.

Technical Leadership & Collaboration

- Conducts code reviews, sharing experience and knowledge with others as appropriate.
- Mentors less experienced engineers, providing technical direction and supporting their professional growth.
- Produces written design documentation sufficient for a distributed team to work from asynchronously.
- Takes a lead role and actively participates in planning meetings, including writing,



correctly sizing, and accurately detailing and breaking down stories and defects.
- Communicates project status regularly, inclusive of all pertinent details, with all necessary stakeholders.
- Continuously develops a deep expertise in Mastercam's critical business processes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

The Talents We’re Seeking

Education

- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 6 - 9 years' experience developing web applications, with strong working knowledge of PHP, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
- 3+ years' experience developing and supporting ecommerce applications, including payment gateway integration and handling of refund, failure, and reconciliation scenarios.
- Extensive experience developing custom functionality on WordPress, including custom plugin and theme development, the hooks and filters system, and the WordPress REST API.
- Demonstrated experience developing web applications outside of WordPress, evidencing breadth across more than a single platform.
- Experience designing and building APIs and relational data models.
- Experience deploying applications to a cloud platform.
- Experience with standard software development practices such as source control, peer reviews, and unit testing.
- Experience with agile software development.
- Experience mentoring or providing technical direction to other developers.
- Working familiarity with modern JavaScript libraries and frameworks, particularly React, is preferred given its use in the WordPress block editor and in WooCommerce checkout components.

- Documents designs and decisions clearly and in sufficient detail for colleagues working in other time zones.
- A proven ability to drive projects to completion and a track record of delivering well-designed,



high-quality software.
- Sound judgment about when to follow WordPress conventions and when a custom solution is warranted.
- Sufficient breadth of platform experience to evaluate WordPress objectively against alternatives when requirements demand it.
- Operates with a high degree of autonomy while escalating architectural and compliance questions appropriately.
- Problem solving and analysis skills.
