About the Role
Scale.jobs is a hybrid AI + human job application platform. Real humans, backed by automation, apply to jobs on behalf of job seekers so they can spend their time interviewing instead of filling out forms. We're a Techstars '24 company, profitable, serving job seekers across the US, Canada, UK, Germany, and Australia. Millions of applications processed so far.
You'd be our SEO person. Not one of several - the one. You own organic growth end to end: strategy, execution, and the number we look at every month.
Here's why the timing is interesting. A growing share of our customers now find us through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews instead of ten blue links. The classic playbook still matters, but the ground underneath it is moving. We want someone who's paying attention to that.
You'll get direct CMS access. You're expected to ship on-page changes yourself, not queue everything behind a developer. Code-level work goes to engineering with a explicit spec you wrote.
What you'll actually be doing
1. On-page. Keyword research, mapping, and intent analysis across blogs, landing pages, and programmatic pages. Primary and secondary keywords assigned per URL so two pages never fight each other. Titles and metas written for clicks, not just relevance. Heading structure, internal linking, topic clusters, killing orphan pages. Schema (Article, FAQ, JobPosting, Breadcrumb, Organization) plus OG and Twitter cards.
2. AI search (GEO/AEO). Structure content so AI engines can extract and cite it - clean Q&A; blocks, tight definitions, claims backed by schema. Track our citation share across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews. Watch where competitors are getting surfaced and close the gap.
3. Technical.
Semrush audits triaged by revenue impact, not error count. Robots.txt, sitemaps, canonicals, crawl budget, index coverage. Core Web Vitals. Site architecture, breadcrumbs, pagination, mobile rendering, redirects, duplicate content. When you can't ship it yourself, you write the spec - repro steps, affected URLs, expected outcome.
4. Content. Blogs and newsletters that actually bring traffic and leads. Revamping old underperforming posts, which is often better ROI than net-recent. Editing and formatting pages in basic HTML.
5. Off-page. Outreach, guest posts, resource-page placements. Converting unlinked brand mentions into links. Competitor backlink gap analysis. Reddit and niche job-seeker communities - real participation, not spam. Backlink health monitoring. And digital PR around launches, which is completely greenfield here, so you'd be building it from zero.
6. Reporting. Own the dashboard across GSC, GA4, and Semrush. Monthly report that ties organic performance to signups and revenue. Recommendations, not a metrics dump.
We'll vibe if you…
- Have 4 years of hands-on SEO. Actual execution, not agency oversight.
- Can plan and run on-page and off-page strategy without someone handing you a brief
- Do keyword research, mapping, and intent analysis in your sleep
- Are comfortable editing and formatting pages in basic HTML
- Write titles and metas that earn the click
- Write genuinely good long-form content - blogs, newsletters - without needing a second editor
- Know your way around Semrush audits
- Can look at Semrush + GSC + GA4, find the real problem, and either fix it or spec it clearly
- Actually get GEO/AEO - how content gets written, structured, and surfaced in AI answers
- Optimize blogs and pages as per the competitor analysis and market trends.
- Report performance with recommendations attached, not just charts
- Are opinionated about prioritization and can defend why one fix beats twenty others
- Find the AI search shift interesting rather than annoying
Bonus points: SaaS or marketplace SEO. Multi-region work (hreflang, geo-targeting - we serve five markets). Programmatic SEO at scale. Basic SQL or spreadsheet modeling. Familiarity with Next.js and how rendering affects crawlability. Digital PR or founder-led distribution.
Tools: GSC, GA4, Semrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, Sheets, and whichever AI visibility tracker we land on.
What's in it for you
- Full ownership. You're not executing someone else's SEO strategy. It's yours.
- You ship. Direct CMS access, no waiting three sprints for a title tag change.
- Profitable company. We're not burning the runway. That means a real budget for tools and links, and no pressure to chase vanity numbers for a deck.
- A genuinely new problem. AI search optimization has not settled the playbook yet. Whatever you figure out here is yours to take anywhere.
