The position of Product Design Engineer works in the Design and Engineering Department to develop new parts and products and maintain/improve existing ones. The ideal candidate is an individual who works well with a team and has very strong design engineering skills.
Experience designing high-volume parts, knowledge of metals, materials, manufacturing techniques and standards along with the ability to provide direction and support regarding product designs and design changes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Complete engineering change requests (ECRs), maintaining accurate 3D models and updating all associated documentation to current drawing standards.
- Generate high-quality design drawings for parts and assemblies using sound engineering judgment and fabrication-appropriate design practices.
- Develop recent part specifications, draft assembly procedures, and review layouts and drawings to ensure strong documentation and drafting standards.
- Utilize computer-aided design and drafting tools to document designs and perform design analyses, with Autodesk Inventor as the primary mechanical design platform.
- Support fellow engineers in the development of complex designs, including layouts, detailed drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).
- Collaborate with Global engineering team and cross-functionally with sales, management, and customers to conceptualize, develop, and refine new technologies and products.
- Work closely with internal stakeholders to deliver timely and accurate product design outputs.
- Provide a high level of customer service to both internal and external customers, treating design as a value-added product.
- Perform dimensioning and tolerance analyses for components, subassemblies, and full assemblies to ensure proper fit and function.
- Apply experimental, empirical, and/or numerical analysis methods to evaluate and validate design form, fit, and function.
- Prototype designs and participate in formal design reviews with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Interface with external vendors—including fabricators, mold makers, tooling suppliers, and automation vendors—to support equipment evaluation, sourcing, and procurement.
- Assess and evaluate vendors’ technical capabilities for design feasibility and manufacturability.
Education and Experience Summary:
- BE Mechanical
- 2–4 years of relevant work experience involving hands-on product design, design drafting, and engineering documentation creation.
- Strong 3D CAD modeling and 2D CAD drafting skills – demonstrated understanding of drafting standards, dimensioning, and CAD links between models and drawings (Certification in Inventor is a strong plus).
- Experience within the manufacturing industry.
- Experience working with engineering change control systems.
- Sufficient knowledge of common fabrication techniques (machining, plastic molding, sheet metal forming, casting, and stamping) to understand part design requirements and typical tolerances.
- Ability to draft technical reports to support design outputs.
- High attention to detail.
- Familiarity with basic Six Sigma tools associated with product design.
- Eager to work, learn, teach, and engage as a team player.
- Proven skills working with cross-functional teams.
- Intermediate skills with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and MS Project.
- Ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- A self-starter who is motivated, recognizes opportunities, communicates ideas, and acts with minimal direction in a dynamic environment.
