Job Purpose

To manage and control the melting, alloying, and metal quality during production to ensure consistent chemistry, sound castings, high yield, and minimum defects, while meeting production targets safely and cost-effectively.

Key Responsibilities

1. Melting & Production Control

Operate and control induction / electric arc / crucible furnaces.

Plan daily melting schedules as per production requirements.

Ensure correct charge mix (scrap, returns, alloys) for targeted chemistry.

Optimize furnace utilization, heat cycle time, and energy consumption.

2. Metallurgical Control

Ensure chemical composition meets specification using spectrometer analysis.

Control alloy additions, inoculation, and nodularization (where applicable).

Monitor metal temperature, superheat, and holding time.

Maintain melt cleanliness and reduce gas pick-up and inclusions.

3. Quality & Defect Reduction

Analyze and reduce casting defects such as:
Shrinkage, porosity, gas defects

Cold shuts, misruns

Inclusions and hard spots

Implement corrective actions through metallurgical adjustments.





Coordinate with QA for rejection analysis and improvement actions.

4. Microstructure & Mechanical Properties

Ensure required microstructure (pearlitic / ferritic / bainitic, etc.).

Control grain size, carbide formation, and graphite morphology.

Conduct and review microstructure, hardness, and mechanical test results.

Support process control for heat treatment (if applicable).

5. Furnace & Refractory Management

Monitor furnace lining life and refractory condition.

Plan furnace relining and maintenance activities.

Coordinate with maintenance team for furnace health.

6. Yield, Cost & Productivity Improvement

Improve metal yield and reduce melting losses.

Control ferro-alloy and consumable usage.

Reduce energy cost per ton of melt.

Implement Kaizen and process improvement projects.

7. Safety & Compliance

Ensure compliance with foundry safety practices.

Follow PPE, molten metal
