Job Summary
The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills, creativity, excellent communication skills, and a keen eye for detail. As a New Product Design Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, analysing, and improving new products and components from initial concept through to production. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop innovative, cost-effective, manufacturable, and high-quality products that meet customer requirements and company objectives.
The role requires a strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, manufacturing processes, CAD modelling, design for manufacture, and product development. The successful candidate will be comfortable managing multiple projects, solving technical challenges, communicating with customers and suppliers, and supporting products throughout the development and manufacturing process.
Role & responsibilities
- Design and develop new products, components, and assemblies from concept through to production.
- Generate innovative product concepts based on customer requirements, specifications, and market needs.
- Create 3D CAD models, detailed engineering drawings, assemblies, and manufacturing documentation using CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, or equivalent.
- Develop prototypes and evaluate designs through testing, analysis, and design verification.
- Modify and optimise existing products to improve performance, functionality, manufacturability, reliability, and cost.
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to ensure products can be manufactured efficiently and reliably.
- Select appropriate materials, manufacturing processes, components, and finishes based on product requirements.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, procurement, quality assurance, suppliers, and other stakeholders throughout the product development process.
- Participate in design reviews and provide technical recommendations to improve product performance and development processes.
- Prepare and maintain engineering drawings, BOMs, specifications, design calculations, and other technical documentation.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, safety requirements, tolerances, and company quality procedures.
- Inspect and review CNC-manufactured components to ensure dimensional accuracy and compliance with specified tolerances.
- Support prototype development, product testing, troubleshooting, and design validation.
- Perform reverse engineering using scan data, existing components, measurements, and physical samples where required.
- Support the development and setup of 3D-printed prototypes and other rapid prototyping methods.
- Obtain quotations, compare manufacturing costs, calculate product costs, and support preparation of customer quotations.
- Communicate with customers to understand technical requirements, provide design updates, and resolve product-related enquiries.
- Support the preparation of sales quotations and technical correspondence in a timely and qualified manner.
- Manage multiple new product development projects and ensure designs are delivered within agreed timelines.
- Maintain accurate records of design changes, revisions, testing, modifications, and technical specifications.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in product design, manufacturing processes, quality, and cost.
- Stay up to date with new technologies, materials, manufacturing methods, CAD tools, and industry best practices.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Product Design, or a related discipline.
- Experience or strong interest in new product development and mechanical product design.
- Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, tolerances, and manufacturing processes.
- Understanding of CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, injection moulding, 3D printing, and other manufacturing processes is advantageous.
- Good understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T;, dimensional tolerances, and design specifications.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a creative approach to product development.
- Ability to transform concepts and customer requirements into practical, manufacturable products.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality engineering designs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of reverse engineering and 3D scanning/scan data is advantageous.
- Experience with prototyping and 3D printing is advantageous.
- Strong understanding of quality requirements, safety standards, and relevant engineering standards.
