Job Description for a VMC Operator
Job Title: VMC Operator
Department: Production
*Location: Jigani,Bangalore
Shift: Rotational Shift
Experience: 3 to 6 years
NOTE :
- MINIMUM 3 YEAR AGREEMENT (yearly increment will be there & Yearly bonus at festival time too)
Job Purpose
To operate, set up, and maintain Vertical Machining Centers to produce precision components as per engineering drawings, while maintaining quality, safety, and productivity standards.
Preferred
- Experience with 4th axis VMC is a plus
- Knowledge of CAM software like Mastercam, solidcam
- Familiarity with IATF 16949 / ISO 9001
Key Responsibilities
1. Machine Operation & Setup
- Load and unload workpieces on VMC safely
- Set up fixtures, jigs, vices, and cutting tools as per job requirements
- Read and interpret programs, engineering drawings, and GD&T; symbols
- Perform tool offset setting, work offset setting, and machine zeroing
- Run first-off inspection and adjust offsets for dimensional accuracy
2. Machining & Quality
- Operate VMC to perform milling, drilling, boring, tapping, pocketing, facing operations
- Check dimensions using Vernier, Micrometer, Height Gauge, Bore Gauge, CMM for critical parts
- Maintain tolerances as per ISO 2768 / customer drawings, typically 0.01mm to 0.05mm
- Identify and report machining defects, tool wear, chatter, surface finish issues
- Maintain SPC records and fill job cards, production logs
3. Maintenance & Safety
- Perform daily cleaning, coolant check, oil level check, and basic preventive maintenance
- Report machine breakdowns, alarms, and tooling issues to maintenance
- Follow EHS guidelines: use PPE, lockout/tagout, handle sharp tools safely
- Keep work area 5S compliant
4. Other
- Coordinate with CNC programmer, Quality, and Production for job planning
- Suggest cycle time reduction and process improvements
- Train current operators if required
- Work on multiple VMC makes: Haas,LMW,HMT..etc
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: ITI Fitter/Turner/Machinist, Diploma in Mechanical, or equivalent
- Experience: 3 - 6 years
- Technical Skills:
- G-code, M-code basics + Fanuc/Siemens/Mitsubishi control
- Ability to read mechanical drawings
- Knowledge of cutting tools, speeds & feeds for MS, SS, Aluminum, EN8, etc.
- Basic knowledge of offsets and tool presetting
- Soft Skills: Attention to detail, problem-solving, able to work in shifts
Work Conditions: Standing for long hours, exposure to coolant, noise. PPE mandatory.
