Rug Designer

Location: Vadodara, Gujarat

Job Type: Full-Time | Onsite (Work from Office)

Experience: 3-5 Years

Qualifications: Graduate or Postgraduate in Textile & Carpet/Fashion/Design

Function: Design – Handmade Rugs

COZ CLUB® is seeking an experienced, hands-on Rug Designer to join our growing design team. This is a specialist rug design role. Working closely with the Head of Design and the wider team, you will own bespoke rug programmes end to end — from concept through to factory-ready specifications and finished production.

The successful candidate will bring demonstrable, hands-on experience designing and developing handmade rugs — hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and hand-woven — with a sophisticated eye for color and composition, deep command of pile textures, heights, materials and construction, and the technical discipline to translate a concept into instructions a weaving unit can execute without ambiguity.

Role Summary

You will take ownership of rug projects from initial concept through to final production, ensuring every design reflects exceptional standards of creativity, craftsmanship, and attention to detail.

You will convert artwork, mood boards, and client briefs into detailed, factory-ready design instructions — including construction, knot/tuft density, pile height, yarn and material specification, color placement, and finishing — and will remain accountable for design integrity through sampling, strike-offs, and bulk production.

You will be involved in bespoke client projects, acting as a trusted design partner to both clients and colleagues. This role requires a balance of creativity, technical rug expertise, commercial awareness, and project management skills.

Key Responsibilities

Rug Design & Development

- Create bespoke rug concepts for luxury residential, hospitality, and commercial projects.
- Design across hand-knotted, hand-tufted, hand-woven, and mixed-construction rugs, selecting the construction that best delivers the design intent.
- Develop and specify texture, pile height, carving, loop/cut combinations, yarn blends (wool, silk, viscose, bamboo silk, cotton, blends), and finishing treatments.
- Build and manage colourways, colour placement, and pooling; work confidently with dye lots, colour matching, and yarn shade cards.
- Adapt and customize existing designs to meet specific client requirements, sizes, and project briefs.

- Prepare design layouts to scale, ensuring pattern repeat, border logic, and motif scale hold true at full rug size.
- Drive the sampling cycle — review strike-offs and samples, diagnose deviations, and issue corrections until the sample matches design intent.

Technical Documentation & Production Handover

- Translate concepts, artwork, and creative direction into detailed, factory-ready design instructions that a weaving or tufting unit can execute without interpretation.
- Produce complete technical specification sheets — construction, knot/tuft count and density, pile height and texture map, yarn and material call-outs, color keys, dimensions, tolerances, backing, binding, and finishing.
- Prepare production-ready artwork, graphs, and maps (including point-paper / graph translation where applicable).
- Work closely with manufacturing partners and weaving units to ensure design integrity is maintained throughout production.
- Maintain detailed design records, specification libraries, and revision control across the development cycle.

Client & Industry Collaboration

- Collaborate with leading interior designers, architects, and specifiers on bespoke rug projects.
- Present concepts, samples, renders, and design proposals to clients with confidence and professionalism.
- Build technically credible presentations that carry both the creative story and the production detail behind it.
- Provide expert design guidance throughout the client journey, from initial consultation to final installation.

Project Management

- Manage multiple rug projects simultaneously from concept through to completion.
- Ensure all deadlines are met across design, sampling, and production milestones.
- Maintain accurate project documentation, design records, and development schedules.
- Collaborate effectively with internal teams to ensure seamless project delivery and communication.

- Skills & Experience

- Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on rug design experience — specifically designing and developing handmade rugs within a luxury rug house, manufacturer, exporter, or design studio. This is the primary requirement.
- Proven working knowledge of rug construction — hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and hand-woven — including knot types, densities, quality grades, and the design implications of each.
- Strong command of rug textures, pile heights, carving, and materials and how each behaves in production and in the finished piece.
- Demonstrated ability to issue factory-ready instructions and to work directly with weavers, tufters, and production teams through sampling and bulk.
- Exceptional understanding of colour, composition, scale, texture, and pattern development at rug scale.
- Proven experience creating bespoke rugs for high-end interior design projects.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects from concept through to production and delivery.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent presentation and communication skills, with the ability to defend design and technical decisions in front of clients.
- Commercial awareness and understanding of the luxury interiors market.
- Comfortable working within a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and collaborative environment.
- Degree qualified in Textile Design, Interior Design, Product Design, or a related creative discipline.
- Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD and/or Texcelle (NedGraphics) is strongly preferred and will be a significant advantage.
- Proven experience preparing artwork, technical specifications, graphs/maps, and production documentation for rug manufacturing.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Personal Attributes

- Creative, cutting-edge, and highly design-driven.
- Passionate about rugs, luxury interiors, craftsmanship, and materiality.
- Technically rigorous — comfortable owning the detail that makes a design manufacturable.
- Collaborative, relationship-focused, and team-oriented.
- Commercially minded with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Able to balance creativity with practical considerations and project deadlines.
- Enthusiastic, proactive, and eager to contribute to continued organisational growth and success.
