Job Title: Intern – Genetic Biocuration & Systems Biology Interpretation

Location: Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bengaluru | Onsite

Organization: MetFlux Research Pvt. Ltd.

Employment Type: Internship, with potential conversion to a full-time role based on performance

About Us

MetFlux Research is developing the ΩmeX ecosystem - a connected scientific and computational framework that brings together systems biology, multi-omics data, mechanistic knowledge, and computational modelling to support precision health applications.

Our genetics vertical supports MetSights Precision Genetics, which provides practitioner-oriented genetic risk interpretation, polygenic risk insights, mechanistic variant curation, and personalised health recommendations.

This internship is designed for individuals interested in working at the intersection of human genetics, systems biology, scientific biocuration, and translational interpretation.

Role Overview

As an intern in Genetic Biocuration and Systems Biology Interpretation, you will work with our bioinformatics and systems biology teams to investigate how genetic variants influence genes, pathways, physiological processes, and health-related phenotypes.

This is not primarily a conventional bioinformatics pipeline-development or sequencing-data analysis role. The work is centred on:

- Scientific literature investigation
- Gene and variant biocuration
- Systems-biology interpretation
- Evidence assessment and validation
- Structured scientific documentation
- Translation of genetic findings into biologically meaningful insights

You will help connect individual genetic findings with their wider molecular and physiological context, contributing to the scientific knowledge layers behind MetSights Precision Genetics.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct structured and in-depth literature research on genes, genetic variants, regulatory mechanisms, biological pathways, and health-related phenotypes.

- Curate and validate variant-level evidence using primary scientific literature and established genomic resources such as ClinVar, dbSNP, GWAS Catalog, Ensembl, OMIM, UniProt, and GTEx.
- Examine how genetic variants may affect gene expression, protein function, molecular pathways, and downstream physiological processes.
- Evaluate the strength, consistency, biological plausibility, and limitations of available evidence.
- Distinguish between direct experimental evidence, population-level associations, computational predictions, and mechanistic hypotheses.
- Develop clear, structured summaries connecting: Variant to gene, Gene to molecular function, Molecular function to pathway, Pathway to physiological process, Physiological process to health-related phenotype.
- Support the scientific review and expansion of polygenic risk score–related knowledge, including biological interpretation of contributing loci and pathways.
- Cross-check curated annotations for scientific accuracy, traceability, consistency, and appropriate interpretation.
- Maintain high-quality biocuration records aligned with MetFlux documentation and evidence standards.
- Use Python or R for organizing datasets, performing quality checks, and supporting small-scale curation automation where useful.
- Contribute to the genetic knowledge and interpretation layers used within the ΩmeX ecosystem and MetSights Precision Genetics.
