Description
About the Role
Title - Software Engineer, SMTS - Infrastructure Platform Engineering
We're looking for a strong infrastructure engineer to contribute to high-impact modernization and cloud platform efforts at Salesforce. A core focus is supporting the migration of Tableau's legacy hypervisor and VM infrastructure into Salesforce-managed infrastructure — owning defined workstreams (e.g., discovery, design, and delivery for a specific domain or service area) within a broader effort spanning Public Cloud, Networking, Security, SRE, and Database teams. More broadly, this role also builds and operates scalable, secure public cloud solutions (AWS, with Azure/GCP exposure) as part of the platform team.
You'll bring solid technical depth to discovery conversations, help translate ambiguous legacy environments into concrete implementation plans for your area, and contribute to a reusable migration and platform engineering foundation that serves future acquisitions and ongoing cloud operations alike.
You'll bring deep technical credibility to discovery conversations, translate ambiguous legacy environments into clear architectural plans, and help build a reusable migration and platform engineering foundation that serves future acquisitions and ongoing cloud operations alike.
If you thrive in environments where the map doesn't exist yet and you have the skills to draw it, this role is for you.
What You'll Do
- Conduct technical discovery for a defined portion of the legacy infrastructure (e.g., a specific service or workload class within Tableau's hypervisor/VM environment), documenting findings and gaps for your area
- Partner with Public Cloud, Networking, Security, Storage, OS, and SRE teams to design and implement your piece of the target infrastructure architecture (AWS, Private Cloud, or hybrid), working from the broader architecture direction set by architects/LMTS+ leads
- Develop and implement cloud solutions for medium-complexity problems, designing for performance, scalability, and reliability
- Produce implementation plans for your workstream — design, effort estimates, resource needs — and deliver reliably against them
- Execute migration and modernization work for your assigned portion of the legacy VM-based infrastructure, ensuring continuity of dependent services throughout the transition
- Build components with reusability in mind, contributing to a scalable migration framework and infrastructure model that reduces repeated engineering effort for future M&A; integrations
- Build, maintain, and deploy infrastructure as code (IaC) and contemporary CI/CD pipelines to streamline deployment velocity
- Build automation for operations, self-healing systems,
proactive alerting, and event auto-remediation within your area
- Collaborate across infrastructure disciplines to deliver your workstream on schedule, escalating cross-team dependencies as needed
- Apply and help refine security and networking standards aligned with Salesforce requirements (e.g., supporting retirement of legacy auth systems)
- Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure timely incident response, root-cause analysis, and minimal downtime
- Document decisions, architecture diagrams, runbooks, and operational playbooks to support long-term maintainability
Coding &
- Technical Depth
Given The Scope Of Building On AWS, Working At The Hypervisor Level, And Supporting Large-scale File Transport, Candidates Should Be Comfortable Coding —
- Not Just Configuring —
- Across
- Infrastructure-as-Code & automation: Terraform, Ansible/Puppet, and Python for tooling, orchestration, and operational scripts
- AWS SDK/API-level development: boto3 (Python) or AWS SDK for Go/Java, to build directly against AWS APIs (EC2, VPC, S3, EBS, networking) rather than console/Terraform alone
- Hypervisor/virtualization internals: experience with VMware APIs (vSphere API/PowerCLI), KVM/libvirt, or Nitro-based EC2 bare metal for building and operating hypervisor infrastructure including vSphere clustering, HA/DRS configuration, and storage vMotion-level troubleshooting
- Large-scale file transport & data movement: experience with high-throughput transfer protocols and services —
- AWS DataSync, Transfer Family, S3 multipart/accelerated transfer — for large file transport projects on AWS
- Systems-level languages: Go or Java for performance-sensitive, throughput-heavy infra tooling, alongside Python for automation
- Networking-level coding: scripting/automating routing, SDN, and network virtualization configs where hypervisor build-out includes network virtualization
- Linux/Windows OS fundamentals: Solid Linux administration skills and working knowledge of Windows Server administration
Mandatory Skills &
- Experience
- 6-8+ years of infrastructure engineering experience, with a strong background in cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or DevOps
- Hands-on experience with hypervisor/VM environments (VMware vSphere, ESXi, Hyper-V, KVM, or equivalent)
and/or public cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred
- Azure/GCP a plus)
- Proven experience migrating on-prem or legacy VM workloads to public or private cloud at scale by applying appropriate migration strategies (lift-and-shift, re-platform, or re-architect) based on workload constraints
- Deep understanding of networking fundamentals —
- VPCs, VLANs, routing, firewall rules, DNS, load balancing
- Strong knowledge of infrastructure security principles: identity management, Okta/SSO integration, zero-trust networking, secrets management
- Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tooling (Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, or equivalent) and CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure
- Demonstrated ability to conduct technical discovery in complex legacy environments and produce structured architecture documentation and effort decompositions
- Strong working knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies and software development lifecycles
- Comfortable operating across multi-disciplinary teams — able to hold detailed technical conversations with storage engineers, security architects, and SREs in the same day
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present architecture decisions and trade-offs clearly to technical and leadership audiences
- Experience with vulnerability management —
- CVE triage, patch cadence, scanning tools (Qualys/Tenable/Nessus), and remediation SLAs
Preferred Skills
- Experience supporting SaaS or enterprise software customer environments (e.g., environment reproduction for support/troubleshooting use cases)
- Familiarity with Salesforce's infrastructure ecosystem —
- Trust, Public Cloud, or internal platform engineering experience is a meaningful advantage
- Prior experience with M&A; infrastructure integration or post-acquisition platform consolidation
- Background in Storage and Database infrastructure in hybrid or multi-cloud environments
- Containerization & orchestration experience (Docker, Kubernetes/AWS EKS)
- Modern CI/CD &
- GitOps expertise (GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Argo Workflows)
- Strong scripting/programming skills (Python, YAML, JSON)
- AWS Certifications (Solutions Architect Professional or DevOps Engineer Professional) a plus
- VMware certification (VCP-DCV or equivalent) preferred, or demonstrated equivalent hands-on production experience with vSphere/ESXi environments
- Ability to break down infrastructure workstreams into milestones and communicate progress to stakeholders
- Experience prioritizing work based on risk, dependencies, and business impact in a fast-moving delivery environment
- Familiarity with SRE/operational excellence principles —
- SLOs, runbooks, on-call readiness
