About The Role The Applied Engineering Benchmark Specialist role at Synthires offers an exciting opportunity for experienced engineers, researchers, and technical experts to contribute to cutting-edge AI evaluation projects. In this position, you will leverage your technical expertise to develop and review academic assessment content, specifically engineering questions designed to evaluate AI reasoning in specialized domains.

Your work will directly support the creation of high-quality benchmarks that measure AI performance in complex engineering tasks, ultimately aiding in the development of more intelligent and capable AI systems. This is a fully remote, hourly contract position, ideal for professionals seeking flexible work arrangements and meaningful engagement in innovative research initiatives.

Qualifications Candidates should possess a PhD in Engineering or a closely related field; however, exceptional master's degree holders with significant expertise in a specialized engineering domain will also be considered.



A strong command of graduate-level engineering principles, applied mathematics, and technical standards is essential.

Excellent written English and technical communication skills are required to articulate complex concepts clearly and accurately. The ability to create precise, well-structured technical content and to verify the accuracy and clarity of existing questions is vital. Candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and be capable of engaging with academic literature and technical references effectively.

Responsibilities

- Author challenging multiple-choice engineering questions that assess deep conceptual understanding across various domains.
- Verify the accuracy, clarity, completeness, and technical rigor of existing assessment questions.
- Rate questions based on their academic difficulty level—Medium, Hard, or Expert.
- Create questions with one correct answer and nine plausible distractors designed to challenge advanced AI solvers.
- Develop detailed, step-by-step technical solutions in Markdown format to accompany each question.
- Provide one to five reputable academic references for each question to ensure credibility and scholarly grounding.
- Document and justify any edits made during the question verification process, maintaining transparency and quality control.





The engineering domains covered include Semiconductor Design & Manufacturing (VLSI), Control Science & Engineering, Mechatronics, Reactor and Plant Design & Separations, Reservoir Engineering & Maintenance, and Bioinstrumentation & Biotechnology. Your contributions will directly impact the quality and robustness of AI benchmarks used in these specialized fields. Benefits This role offers a competitive hourly compensation ranging from $61 to $77, reflecting the level of expertise and experience required. It is a fully remote position, providing flexibility to work from anywhere with an internet connection.

The engagement is on an hourly contract basis, with an expected commitment of at least 10 hours per week, allowing for a balanced work-life integration.
