Design & Drafting Engineer – Castings & Forgings

Department: Engineering – Design & Drafting

Location: Bangalore, India

Experience: 5+ years

Employment Type: Full-time

About AltEdge

AltEdge is a full-service contract manufacturing partner connecting global OEMs with a curated network of India’s best manufacturers.

We cover the complete metal BOM, including castings, forgings, precision-machined parts, fasteners, and stampings, supported by AI-powered supplier matching, DFM-first prototyping, and zero-defect quality assurance.

As we scale our engineering capabilities, we are building an in-house Design & Drafting function to support customer programs from concept through production release.

AltEdge is backed by leading Indian venture capital firms, including 3one4 Capital and Shastra VC.

About the Role

We are looking for a Design & Drafting Engineer with strong hands-on experience in casting and forging component design to join our Bangalore engineering team.

The role sits at the intersection of customer engineering requirements and supplier manufacturing capability. You will translate OEM design intent into manufacturable, cost-effective casting and forging designs and drawings while applying DFM/DFC principles early in the product development cycle.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with OEMs in automotive, industrial equipment, off-highway, or heavy engineering, with strong expertise in SolidWorks and AutoCAD and working knowledge of CATIA and Creo.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Drafting

- Create and detail 3D models, GA drawings, and manufacturing drawings for casting and forging components.
- Work on sand casting, investment casting, die casting, open-die forging, and closed-die forging components.
- Interpret customer specifications, 2D/3D data, GD&T; requirements, and engineering standards.
- Convert OEM/customer design intent into supplier-ready manufacturing drawings.
- Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Casting/Forging (DFC)

principles.
- Consider draft angles, parting lines, fillet radii, wall thickness, machining allowances, and shrinkage factors.
- Develop casting/forging process drawings, including gating, riser, and parting-line layouts, in coordination with supplier tooling teams.
- Prepare tolerance stack-ups, GD&T; callouts, and dimensional control plans for critical features.

Cross-Functional Coordination
- Collaborate with Supplier Quality, Sourcing, and Program Management teams to align design intent with supplier manufacturing capabilities.
- Work directly with customer engineering teams, including international OEM customers, to resolve design queries, ECNs, and drawing approvals.
- Support tooling design reviews with casting and forging suppliers.
- Identify manufacturability risks early in the development cycle.
- Coordinate with machining, heat treatment, and surface finishing teams to ensure downstream processes are considered during design.

Documentation & Engineering Processes
- Maintain drawing revisions, BOM structures, ECR/ECN documentation, and engineering records.
- Develop and maintain standard casting/forging design guidelines, tolerance charts, and engineering templates.
- Provide design inputs for PPAP/APQP documentation, including control plans, dimensional reports, and drawing sign-offs where required.
- Ensure drawings and documentation comply with relevant ASME/ISO drawing standards.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or a related discipline.

- 5+ years of experience in design and drafting of casting and/or forged metal components.
- Prior experience with OEMs or OEM-facing engineering environments, preferably in automotive, industrial equipment, off-highway, or heavy engineering.
- Excellent proficiency in SolidWorks, including:
- 3D modelling
- Manufacturing drawing creation
- Drawing detailing
- GD&T;
- Engineering drawing standards
- Strong knowledge of casting and forging design principles and manufacturing constraints.
- Hands-on experience with GD&T; and tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Working knowledge of CATIA and Creo/Pro-E for reviewing and making light edits to customer-supplied models/data.
- Good knowledge of AutoCAD.
- Solid understanding of casting processes such as sand casting, investment casting, and die casting.
- Strong understanding of forging processes such as open-die, closed-die, and ring rolling.
- Good communication skills in English and Hindi, both written and spoken.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with PLM/PDM systems for drawing and revision management.
- Exposure to casting/forging simulation tools such as solidification, die-fill, or forging-flow simulation.
- Experience supporting supplier tooling development.
- Experience with NPI/NPD programs.
- Working knowledge of PPAP/APQP processes.
- Experience working with international OEM customers and engineering teams.

Why Join AltEdge?
- Work directly with global OEM customers on live engineering programs.
- Join a fast-growing manufacturing-tech startup with high ownership and visibility.
- Gain exposure across the complete castings and forgings value chain — design, tooling, manufacturing, and quality.
- Opportunity to build and shape an in-house engineering and design function.
- Competitive compensation aligned with experience.
