What you’ll do:
You will be working as a Senior FHIR Data Engineer within the healthcare domain, specializing in designing and delivering robust big data pipelines for structured and unstructured healthcare data. These pipelines will run across multiple geographies, helping healthcare organizations achieve their business goals through advanced data ingestion technologies, cloud services, and DevOps practices. You will collaborate closely with Architects from other specialties such as Cloud Engineering, Software Engineering, and ML Engineering to create innovative platforms, solutions, and applications that cater to the latest trends in the healthcare industry, including digital diagnosis, software as a medical product, AI marketplaces, and seamless interoperability using FHIR standards.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Work with cloud engineers and customers to solve complex big data problems by developing utilities for migration, storage, and processing of healthcare data on Cloud platforms, with a strong emphasis on FHIR data models and resources.
- Design and build a cloud migration strategy for cloud and on-premise healthcare applications, ensuring FHIR compliance and data integrity during transitions.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex distributed systems problems related to healthcare data, developing solutions with a significant impact at massive scale, particularly concerning FHIR data ingestion and transformation.
- Build tools to ingest and jobs to process several terabytes or petabytes of healthcare data per day, focusing on efficient parsing, validation, and storage of FHIR resources.
- Design and develop next-gen storage and compute solutions for several large healthcare customers, optimizing for FHIR data access, querying, and analytics.
- Communicate with a wide set of teams, including Infrastructure, Network, Engineering, DevOps, SiteOps teams, and cloud customers, effectively conveying FHIR data architecture and integration strategies.
- Build advanced tooling for automation, testing, monitoring, administration, and data operations across multiple cloud clusters, specifically for FHIR data pipelines and services.
- Design,
develop, and implement data transformation processes to convert various healthcare data formats (e.g., HL7v2, CCDA, custom formats) into FHIR resources.
- Ensure data quality, integrity, and security for FHIR data throughout the entire data lifecycle.
- Collaborate with clinical and business stakeholders to understand FHIR data requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
Skills Expectation:
Must Have:
- 3+ years’ experience of Hands-on in data structures, distributed systems, Hadoop and Spark, SQL and NoSQL Databases.
- Demonstrable experience with FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standards, including FHIR resource models, RESTful API interactions, and common FHIR profiles.
- Strong software development skills in at least one of: Python, PySpark.
- Experience in developing Big Data solutions (migration, storage, processing) specifically within the healthcare domain.
- Experience building and supporting large-scale systems in a production setting.
- Cloud Platforms – AWS, GCP or Azure.
- Big Data Distributions: Any of Apache Hadoop/CDH/HDP/EMR/Google DataProc/HD-Insights Distributed processing Frameworks.
- One or more of MapReduce, Apache Spark, Apache Storm, Apache Flink.
- Database/warehouse: Hive, HBase, and at least one cloud native services (e.g., AWS Redshift, Google BigQuery, Azure Synapse Analytics).
- Orchestration Frameworks: Any of Airflow, Oozie, Apache NiFi, Google DataFlow.
- Message/Event Solutions: Any of Kafka, Kinesis, Cloud Pub/Sub.
- Container Orchestration (Good to have): Kubernetes or Swarm.
Leadership Qualities:
- Ability to lead technology teams and provide them mentorship / support to accelerate performance.
- Experience in leading multiple large projects as well as a deep understanding of Agile developments.
- Effective communication with all the stakeholders involved.
- Communicate clearly about complex subjects and technical plans with technical and non-technical audiences.
Good to Have:
- Experience with FHIR servers (e.g., HAPI FHIR, Google Cloud Healthcare API, Azure API for FHIR).
- Familiarity with healthcare data standards beyond FHIR (e.g., HL7v2, DICOM, CCDA).
- Experience working with Insurance Data.
- Designing and development of ETL pipeline, specifically for healthcare data transformations.
- Requirement gathering and understanding of the problem statement in a healthcare context.
- End-to-end ownership of the entire delivery of the project.
- Designing and documentation of the solution.
- Team management and mentoring.
Behavioral Skills:
- Effective communication with all the stakeholders involved.
- Need to communicate clearly about complex subjects and technical plans, especially when discussing FHIR data models and interoperability challenges.
- Ability to mentor and groom junior members of the team and provide them with guidance and roadmap.
- Must also have the ability to interact with other members of the team (Juniors, Seniors, ATA, TA, BA, etc.) to get their designs from concept to development.
- Keeping various audiences in mind, engineers must write their reports in clear language accessible to all.
What is in it for you:
- Opportunity to learn cloud-native services and how to utilize those services to solve various business problems, with a specific focus on healthcare interoperability and FHIR.
- More hands-on learning opportunity in Python, SQL, FHIR APIs, and healthcare data modeling.
- Sponsored certification opportunity for various courses of your choice (e.g., GCP, AWS, Azure, Tableau, Looker, FHIR certifications, etc.).
- Allocated work will allow you to not only just complete the task but you will be given an opportunity to own-up the work and take responsibility of its end-to-end delivery, particularly for critical FHIR-enabled solutions.
