Engineering Manager / Tech Lead – Digital Evidence Management SystemPosition OverviewiCrimeFighter is hiring a hands-on Engineering Manager / Tech Lead to run our small engineering team (7–10 people) building a CJIS-compliant Digital Evidence Management System serving US law enforcement agencies. This is not a purely managerial role; you'll write production code alongside the team while owning delivery, process, and people leadership. You'll manage a fully remote, India-based engineering team spanning backend (Node.js), web frontend (Angular), and mobile (Swift/iOS), and be the primary point of accountability for shipping on schedule.

Core Responsibilities

- Lead and manage a fully remote engineering team of 7–10 engineers across backend, web, and mobile including 1:1s, performance feedback, hiring input, and day-to-day people management.
- Stay hands-on: write and review production code regularly, and use AI-assisted development tools to move faster without compromising quality.
- Own the engineering process end-to-end: run sprint planning, standups, and retros; manage the Jira backlog; and hold the team accountable to committed timelines.
- Act as tech lead on architectural and design decisions across the stack, partnering with senior engineers rather than dictating from above.
- Balance delivery pressure with the compliance realities of the product — CJIS, SOC 2, and OWASP requirements shape what "done" means, not just working code.
- Identify process or tooling gaps and fix them whether that's sprint hygiene, code review process, or how the team ships and monitors releases.
- Build remote team work practices, guidelines and manage the team productivity
- Partner with product and compliance stakeholders to translate law-enforcement and regulatory requirements into engineering plans.

Role Expectations

- Remote-First Management: You've managed distributed teams as your default mode of working, not as an exception. You know how to keep a fully remote team aligned, unblocked,

and accountable without relying on in-person facetime.
- Player-Coach: You're still a practicing engineer. You can jump into the codebase, review a PR with real technical judgment, and pair with someone stuck on a hard problem — while also owning the team's roadmap and output.
- Process Discipline: Sprints run on time, tickets don't rot in the backlog, and the team has a predictable cadence. You treat the process as a tool for shipping reliably, not overhead.

- AI-Native Development: You use AI coding tools yourself and can guide the team on where they genuinely speed things up versus where they introduce risk — particularly relevant for a compliance-sensitive codebase.
- Ownership Under Compliance: You understand that in a CJIS-compliant system, velocity and rigor aren't in tension — they have to coexist. You hold the team to that bar.
- Communication: Clear, async-first communication is non-negotiable given the remote, distributed nature of the team.

Required

- Proven experience managing a fully remote engineering team of 7–10 people. In-person or co-located management experience only will not fit how we work.
- Currently hands-on as a developer, actively writing production code — not several years removed from IC work.

Comfortable leveraging AI tools in your own workflow.

- Robust command of the engineering process: running sprints, managing a ticket backlog, and consistently shipping work on schedule.
- Solid technical grounding across modern web/backend stacks (Node.js and Angular or equivalent) sufficient to lead technical discussions and review code credibly.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, comfortable operating async across time zones.

Strong PlusExperience at a successful product company or startup, ideally in a scaling-team environment.

Experience at a company that achieved a compliance certification (SOC 2, HIPAA, CJIS, or similar) — having lived through an audit or certification cycle is a real advantage here.

Background in security- or compliance-driven software domains (govtech, healthtech, fintech, law enforcement).
