Role & responsibilities
Job DescriptionPosition Title GM - MEPJob PurposeTo lead and manage the planning, design, coordination, execution, quality assurance, statutory compliance, and operational support of MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing) systems across projects. The role is responsible for ensuring technically sound, cost-effective, safe, sustainable, and error-free MEP solutions while coordinating effectively with internal teams, consultants, contractors, vendors, and other project stakeholders.Key Responsibilities1. Project Coordination & Team Management
- Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, project managers, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders to seamlessly integrate MEP systems into overall project plans.
- Lead, supervise, mentor, and guide MEP engineers and technicians throughout the project lifecycle.
- Coordinate MEP activities from initial planning through design, construction, commissioning, handover, and post-occupancy support.
- Undertake initial-level planning for site readiness, including construction power requirements, site illumination, temporary electrical distribution, and related infrastructure.
- Ensure effective communication and coordination between MEP disciplines and other project functions.
2. Design Leadership & Statutory Compliance
- Lead the design and development of MEP systems in accordance with applicable industry codes, standards, statutory requirements, NBC, IS standards, and project specifications.
- Lead the team in space planning, concept development, detailed design, and engineering calculations.
- Review and oversee electrical load calculations, DG load calculations, fire and life-safety provisions, heat-load calculations, and electrical infrastructure planning.
- Lead population calculations, water-demand calculations, sewage treatment plant capacity, waste composter capacity, rainwater harvesting tank, and recharge-pit calculations.
- Ensure drawings, specifications, calculations, and design deliverables are technically accurate, coordinated, error-free, and compliant with statutory requirements.
- Review and approve MEP drawings at concept, detailed design, and GFC stages.
3. Value Engineering, Budget & Cost Management
- Identify and propose value-engineering opportunities for MEP systems to improve performance, optimize resources, and reduce project costs.
- Prepare MEP budgets at various project stages, including initial, detailed-design (DD), and GFC stages.
- Lead the MEP team in preparing estimates, budgets, and cost plans.
- Monitor project expenditure against approved MEP budgets throughout the project lifecycle.
- Evaluate alternative technologies, materials, equipment, and system configurations to achieve cost-effective solutions without compromising quality, safety, statutory compliance, or performance.
- Coordinate with procurement, commercial, consultants, and vendors to optimize MEP costs.
4. Risk Mitigation & Problem Solving
- Identify potential technical, execution, safety, and operational risks associated with MEP systems.
- Develop and implement appropriate risk-mitigation strategies.
- Ensure MEP systems comply with applicable safety regulations, statutory requirements, and project standards.
- Resolve complex technical challenges during design, construction, commissioning, and operation.
- Troubleshoot MEP-related issues and develop innovative and practical solutions to improve system performance.
- Lead the Facilities Management (FM) team in resolving MEP issues during building operation and post-occupancy.
- Support root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
5. IGBC Certification & Training Leadership
- Initiate and coordinate procurement/engagement of IGBC consultants.
- Coordinate project registration with the IGBC platform and ensure timely completion of certification-related activities.
- Coordinate collection, preparation, review, and submission of relevant documentation from various departments.
- Support and lead the team in achieving IGBC Pre-Certification and Final Certification requirements.
- Monitor and coordinate IGBC certification fee processing at various stages.
- Coordinate with consultants and internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with applicable IGBC requirements.
- Conduct internal training programs for MEP team members covering MEP design concepts, site execution practices, quality requirements, and statutory compliance.
- Conduct awareness and knowledge-sharing sessions for external consultants and project stakeholders to enhance MEP technical understanding.
6. Innovation, Technology Adoption & Quality Assurance
- Promote a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing within the MEP team.
- Encourage team members to identify current solutions, technologies, materials, and processes for improving MEP performance and project efficiency.
- Evaluate and recommend suitable emerging technologies and sustainable MEP solutions.
- Conduct regular training programs on MEP systems for in-house team members.
- Establish and implement quality-control procedures for MEP design, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover.
- Review MEP installations and ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, standards, and quality requirements.
- Drive continuous improvement in MEP system reliability, energy efficiency, maintainability, and lifecycle performance.
7. Vendor Relationships & Technical Expertise
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with MEP suppliers, contractors, manufacturers, consultants, and vendors.
- Participate in technical evaluation and selection of MEP equipment, materials, systems, and service providers.
- Review technical submittals, material approvals, equipment selections, and vendor proposals.
- Provide technical guidance to procurement and project teams on MEP-related requirements.
- Stay updated with the latest MEP technologies, industry trends, codes, standards, sustainable practices, and best-in-class engineering solutions.
- Share technical knowledge and best practices with internal teams and project stakeholders.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering or a relevant MEP engineering discipline.
- 20 to 22 years of relevant experience in MEP design, project management, construction, commissioning, and/or facility management.
- Strong knowledge of MEP systems, project coordination, statutory requirements, NBC, IS standards, fire & life safety, and sustainable building practices.
- Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams and coordinating with architects, consultants, contractors, vendors, and project management teams.
- Experience with IGBC certification and green-building requirements will be highly desirable.
