Job Summary The Senior Software Engineer (Tech Lead) is a senior technical contributor responsible for the design, development, and ongoing evolution of one of the companys digital platform applications.
This is a player-coach role: roughly 70% hands-on architecture, design and code, and 30% leading the delivery cadence of a team of 3- 5 engineers.
You will take an existing application, run and improve it in its current state, and carry it forward as the underlying technology evolves, including onto newer platforms and architectures, while setting the teams technical direction and owning its delivery. Over time the role also brings intelligent, AI-driven capabilities into the application to extend what it can do for users.
The role also owns the Scrum process for the team. There is no separate Scrum Master, so the Tech Lead runs sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives, protects the team from mid- sprint churn, and reports delivery health into the digital PMO. This is a technical leadership role rather than a people-management position; you stay deep in the code while guiding the engineers around you and ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable, and aligned with enterprise IT standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Application Ownership & Engineering Take end-to-end ownership of a digital platform application: its architecture, code quality, reliability, and roadmap.
Design, develop, and maintain applications, services, and integrations across the digital platform ecosystem. Modernize and evolve the application as the technology landscape changes, including moving it onto newer platforms and architectures with minimal disruption to users.
Build intelligent, AI-driven capabilities into the application, from automation of routine tasks to features that reason over context and act on the users behalf.
Build and support APIs, data flows, and system integrations. Translate business requirements into technical designs and scalable solutions.
Support web performance optimization (caching strategies, CDN, page speed improvements).
Develop and deploy cloud-based solutions within AWS environments.
Develop and maintain custom themes, plugins, and extensions within CMS platforms where the current application requires it.
Leverage automation and emerging AI tools to improve development efficiency and platform capabilities.
- Scrum & Agile Delivery Leadership Own the delivery cadence for the team and act as its Scrum lead:
Run the full Scrum cycle for a team of 3-5 engineers: sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
Own and groom the technical backlog with the Product Owner and business stakeholders; translate intake into well-formed, estimable user stories with clear acceptance criteria and a definition of done.
Decompose large initiatives, including platform migrations and re-architecture work, into sprint-sized increments that ship demonstrable value without disrupting users.
Manage sprint capacity, velocity,
and forecasting; keep commitments realistic and flag scope or capacity risk early rather than at sprint end.
Identify, track, and remove impediments and cross-team dependencies; escalate blockers with clear options and recommendations.
Protect the team from mid-sprint churn and unmanaged scope change while keeping the backlog responsive to genuine business priority shifts.
Balance feature delivery against technical debt, production support, and platform modernization within each sprint.
Maintain delivery hygiene in the teams tooling (Jira, Monday.com, or similar): accurate boards, burndown, sprint reports, and release notes.
Report sprint and release status, risks, and delivery metrics into the digital PMO and to business stakeholders in clear, non-technical terms.
Run blameless retrospectives and drive continuous improvement in estimation accuracy, cycle time, code review turnaround, and defect escape rate.
Adapt the process pragmatically where Scrum alone does not fit, applying hybrid or Kanban approaches for spikes, production support, and vendor-dependent work.
- Quality, Reliability & Operations
Ensure code quality, testing coverage, and documentation standards across the team.
Contribute to and improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex system and integration issues.
Ensure data integrity, reliability, and security best practices.
Establish monitoring, logging, and alerting so issues are caught before users report them.
Build production support load explicitly into sprint capacity so reliability work is planned rather than absorbed.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship
Technically lead a team of 3-5 engineers: set technical direction, plan and distribute work to stretch individual strengths, and own the teams delivery and quality.
Provide technical mentorship through code reviews, pairing sessions, and design discussions.
Lead development efforts for projects, enhancements, and platform improvements.
Give direct, timely feedback on both technical output and delivery behaviors; contribute to performance input and career development conversations.
Foster a culture of psychological safety, shared ownership, and high accountability where engineers surface problems early.
Unblock the team, support knowledge sharing, and reduce single points of failure in the codebase.
Collaborate with Product, Marketing, vendors, and IT teams; represent the team in stakeholder conversations and translate technical constraints into business terms.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
8-10 years of experience in software engineering.
3+ years leading engineering teams or squads in a technical lead capacity, with demonstrated ownership of both technical direction and delivery outcomes for a team of 3-5 or more engineers (formal people-
management is not required).
Hands-on experience running Scrum in a software engineering team: sprint planning, backlog refinement,
estimation, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives, with a track record of predictable sprint delivery.
Demonstrated ability to write clear user stories and acceptance criteria,
manage a technical backlog, and forecast delivery using velocity and capacity data.
Strong proficiency in modern web development: JavaScript/TypeScript, a modern frontend framework (React or similar), and a backend language such as Python or Node.js.
Strong experience designing, building, and supporting APIs and system integrations.
Hands-on experience developing scalable, performant web applications in cloud environments.
Hands-on with AWS services such as EC2, S3, CloudFront, Lambda, and basic networking concepts.
Experience modernizing or re-platforming existing applications onto new architectures, managing the transition without disrupting users.
Comfortable integrating AI or intelligent automation into applications, or a strong appetite to build this depth.
Strong problem-solving, debugging, and system design skills.
Familiarity with WordPress or similar CMS platforms (PHP), sufficient to own and operate a CMS-based application in its current state.
Proficiency with agile delivery and collaboration tooling such as Jira, Monday.com, Azure DevOps, or similar.
Experience working within structured IT environments and cross-functional teams.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to report delivery status and risk to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Scrum Master (CSM), Professional Scrum Master (PSM), Secure, or equivalent agile certification.
Experience operating within a PMO governance model, including structured status reporting, risk registers, and change management practices.
Experience coordinating delivery across cross-functional, matrixed, offshore, or multi-vendor teams.
Experience with headless CMS or composable digital platforms.
Experience taking an application through a significant platform migration or architectural overhaul.
Experience building AI-assisted features, intelligent automation, or tool-using AI workflows in production.
Hands-on use of AI-assisted coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar) and the ability to establish team-wide practices around them.
Familiarity with MarTech ecosystems and marketing workflows.
Experience with automation, scripting, or infrastructure-as-code.
Experience with monitoring, logging, and observability tools.
Experience working in global, matrixed enterprise environments.
