Vehicle Level System Engineer
Key Responsibilities
1. Requirements Engineering & System Architecture
- Define and manage vehicle-level technical requirements (performance, range, gradeability, payload, charging time, durability, NVH, safety) and cascade them into subsystem and component-level SORs/specifications.
- Develop and maintain vehicle system architecture: HV/LV electrical architecture, communication network (CAN/CAN-FD) topology, power budget, and functional allocation across ECUs (VCU, BMS, MCU, OBC, DC-DC, cluster, telematics).
- Maintain requirements traceability from vehicle level to component level and to verification/validation evidence.
2. System Integration
- Lead integration of powertrain, battery pack, BMS, on-board charger, thermal management, braking (incl. regen blending), and body/chassis systems into the complete vehicle.
- Define and review vehicle-level functions: drive modes, torque management, charging sequences, HV interlock, fault handling, limp-home strategies, and diagnostics (UDS).
3. Verification, Validation & DVP
- Own the vehicle-level Design Verification Plan (DVP): define test cases, acceptance criteria, and sign-off gates for prototype, pilot, and production builds.
- Plan and execute vehicle-level testing range and energy consumption, performance, gradeability, thermal soak/derating, charging interoperability, durability, and field trials.
- Analyze test and field data (CAN logs, telematics data) to drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
4. Functional Safety & Reliability
- Drive vehicle-level HARA, item definition,
and ASIL determination per ISO 26262; cascade safety goals and functional safety requirements to subsystems.
- Lead vehicle-level DFMEA/system FMEA and support 8D/root-cause investigations for field and validation failures.
- Define safe-state behavior, redundancy needs, and diagnostic coverage targets across ECUs.
5. Regulatory Compliance & Homologation
- Ensure vehicle design compliance and lead homologation activities with ARAI/ICAT for CMVR type approval.
- Own compliance to applicable standards (see Standards Knowledge below), including battery safety amendments and charging infrastructure compatibility.
6. Cross-Functional & Supplier Collaboration
- Work closely with firmware, hardware, mechanical, battery, and manufacturing teams to close system-level design decisions.
- Evaluate and technically manage suppliers for key subsystems; review supplier specifications, test reports, and PPAP/validation evidence.
- Support program management with technical risk assessment, milestone reviews, and build readiness.
Standards Knowledge (Must Have) Shall have valuable knowledge of vehicle-level regulatory and functional standards applicable to EVs, including:
- AIS / Indian regulatory:
AIS-156 (safety of L-category EVs incl. Amendment 3 battery safety), AIS-038 Rev. 2 (safety of M/N-category EVs), AIS-004 (EMC), AIS-048 (battery abuse testing), AIS-039 (energy consumption), AIS-040 (range measurement), AIS-140 (vehicle tracking & telematics), CMVR type-approval framework, IS 17017 (EV charging infrastructure)
- ISO: ISO 26262 (functional safety), ISO 6469 Parts 14 (EV safety RESS, functional safety, electrical protection, post-crash), ISO 21434 (automotive cybersecurity), ISO 17409 (conductive charging connection safety), ISO 14229 (UDS diagnostics)
- IEC: IEC 61851 (conductive charging systems), IEC 62196 (charging plugs/connectors), IEC 61557-8 (insulation monitoring in IT systems), IEC 62660 / IEC 62619 (Li-ion cells for propulsion / industrial applications)
- UN/ECE: UN R100 (electric powertrain safety), UN R136 (L-category electric powertrain safety), UN R10 (EMC)
Required Qualifications & Skills
- B.E./B.Tech in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Automotive Engineering (M.Tech preferred).
- 4–8 years in vehicle/system engineering roles; at least 2 years in EVs (OEM or Tier-1).
- Strong understanding of EV architecture: HV battery systems, BMS, traction motor & inverter, on-board/off-board charging, DC-DC, thermal management, and 12V/48V LV systems.
- Hands-on experience with CAN/CAN-FD tools (CANalyzer/CANoe, Busmaster, PCAN), DBC management, and UDS diagnostics.
- Working knowledge of DFMEA, HARA, DVP&R;, and 8D problem-solving.
