Staff Nurse Role & Responsibilities
Department: Nursing / Clinical Services
Designation: Staff Nurse / Registered Nurse
Reports To: Nursing In-charge / Nursing Superintendent / Matron
Job Summary:
Responsible for providing protected and compassionate patient care, administering medications and treatments, monitoring patient conditions, assisting doctors, maintaining nursing records, and ensuring compliance with hospital clinical and infection-control procedures.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Care
- Provide direct nursing care to patients according to their clinical needs.
- Assess and monitor patients' vital signs and general condition.
- Assist patients with hygiene, nutrition, mobility, and other basic care requirements.
- Maintain patient comfort, dignity, and privacy.
- Report any change in the patient's condition promptly.
1. Medication & Treatment
- Administer medicines and treatments as prescribed by authorized medical professionals.
- Verify the correct patient, medicine, dose, route, and timing before administration.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions and report concerns immediately.
- Maintain accurate medication administration records.
1. Doctor & Clinical Team Coordination
- Assist doctors during examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Communicate relevant patient observations to doctors and senior nursing staff.
- Follow medical instructions and hospital clinical protocols.
- Coordinate with laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, OT, and other departments.
1. Patient Monitoring
- Monitor temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and other relevant parameters.
- Observe patients for changes in symptoms or clinical condition.
- Maintain appropriate monitoring charts.
- Escalate emergencies and deterioration immediately.
1. Emergency Care
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies.
- Assist in emergency procedures and resuscitation as trained.
- Ensure emergency equipment and supplies are readily available.
- Follow hospital emergency-response protocols.
1. Infection Control
- Follow hand hygiene and infection-prevention practices.
- Use PPE appropriately.
- Follow aseptic techniques during procedures.
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of biomedical waste.
- Follow isolation precautions when required.
1. Nursing Documentation
- Maintain accurate nursing notes, patient charts, medication records, and observation sheets.
- Document treatments, procedures, vital signs, and patient responses.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Complete shift handover accurately.
1. Patient & Attendant Communication
- Educate patients and attendants regarding basic care and treatment instructions within the nurse's scope.
- Explain nursing procedures clearly.
- Respond professionally to patient concerns.
- Provide emotional support and compassionate care.
1. Equipment & Ward Management
- Check availability and working condition of essential nursing equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness and readiness of patient-care areas.
- Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
- Monitor nursing consumables and inform the in-charge about shortages.
1. Shift Handover
- Provide complete handover to the incoming nursing team.
- Communicate critical patient information, pending investigations, medications, procedures, and special instructions.
- Ensure continuity of patient care across shifts.
Required Qualifications
- B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid nursing registration with the applicable State Nursing Council.
- Knowledge of basic nursing procedures, patient care, medication administration, and infection control.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Experience
- Freshers and experienced nurses may apply, depending on hospital requirements.
- Experience in ICU, Emergency, OT, Medical/Surgical Ward, NICU, PICU, or other specialty departments is preferred for specialized positions.
