Software Test Engineer IT: Roles & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

- Analyze business and technical requirements to understand testing needs.

- Create test plans, test scenarios, test cases, and test data based on requirements.

- Perform functional, regression, integration, system, smoke, sanity, and exploratory testing.

- Execute manual test cases and document test results.

- Identify, log, track, and retest defects using tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar defect-management systems.

- Collaborate with developers, business analysts, product owners, and other stakeholders to clarify requirements and resolve defects.

- Perform API testing using tools such as Postman or similar tools.

- Validate data and perform SQL/database testing to ensure data accuracy and integrity.

- Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives.

- Support User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and assist business users with test execution and issue resolution.

- Perform end-to-end testing across multiple applications and integrations.

- Conduct cross-browser, compatibility, and basic performance testing where required.

- Maintain test documentation, traceability, and test execution reports.

- Participate in defect triage and help determine defect severity and priority.

- Support production releases and post-release validation/smoke testing.





- Identify opportunities to improve testing processes, coverage, and overall software quality.

- Develop and maintain automated test scripts where automation is part of the role.

- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines in collaboration with DevOps teams, where applicable.

- Ensure testing activities align with organizational quality standards and project timelines.

Typical Day-to-Day Activities

- Review recent requirements and identify potential testing risks.

- Prepare and execute test cases for assigned features.

- Test new builds and perform regression testing.

- Log defects with clear reproduction steps, screenshots/logs, and expected vs. actual results.

- Retest resolved defects.

- Coordinate with developers and business teams on open issues.

- Update test execution status and provide testing progress reports.

- Maintain test cases and automation scripts.

- Participate in sprint meetings and release planning.
