: Shift In-Charge Production

Job Purpose The Shift In-Charge – Production will be responsible for the end-to-end execution of the production plan for the assigned shift, ensuring that committed production and billing quantities are achieved safely, on time, within quality standards, and in line with cost and compliance requirements.
The role will be responsible for managing production output, quality compliance, material availability, machine uptime, manpower deployment, shop-floor discipline, and effective shift handovers.
Key Responsibilities
1. Production Execution
- Execute the shift-wise production plan issued by Production Planning (PPC) and ensure line-wise production targets are achieved against the daily/monthly billing plan.
- Allocate manpower and production lines at the beginning of the shift based on SKU mix, changeover schedules, production priorities, and manpower availability.
- Monitor line-wise output, downtime, changeover time, and production performance in real time.
- Identify and escalate production constraints related to material, machine, manpower, or quality within the shift.
- Ensure effective shift handover, including production achieved versus plan, WIP status, downtime, pending issues, and QC holds.
- Brief the incoming Shift In-Charge on all critical operational issues and pending actions.
- 2. Quality, GMP & Compliance
- Ensure defined IPQC checks are conducted at the prescribed frequency on every running production line.
- Ensure production does not continue when a required quality checkpoint is missed or overdue.
- Enforce GMP/ISO 22716 requirements, including line clearance, batch documentation, hygiene, gowning, and shop-floor practices.
- Immediately stop or place a line on hold in case of a quality deviation and escalate the matter to the QC Shift In-Charge and Production Head.
- Ensure that quality holds are not overridden without appropriate authorization.
- Maintain accurate BMRs, batch documentation, production records, and shift logs to ensure audit readiness and compliance with applicable quality systems, including ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22716:2007.
3. Materials Coordination
- Confirm RM/PM kitting and shift-wise material availability with the Stores/Materials team before line start-up.
- Identify and proactively escalate material shortages against the required production and safety-stock plan.
- Ensure timely material availability to minimize stockout-related production stoppages.
- Complete and maintain material reconciliation covering issued, consumed, and returned quantities.
- Report abnormal material consumption, wastage, or variance to Materials & Planning within the same shift.
4. Equipment & Maintenance
- Coordinate with the on-duty Engineering/Maintenance team for timely breakdown resolution.
- Ensure all machine breakdowns and downtime are recorded accurately with appropriate reason codes for OEE monitoring.
- Monitor equipment performance and recurring breakdown trends.
- Ensure scheduled preventive maintenance activities and maintenance windows are adhered to without compromising equipment reliability or safety.
5. People Management
- Manage shift attendance, manpower deployment, and line-wise staffing requirements.
- Ensure appropriate deployment of skilled and semi-skilled operators based on line requirements and operator capability.
- Maintain shop-floor discipline and address operational or interpersonal issues effectively.
- Enforce safety procedures, PPE requirements, SOP adherence, and protected working practices.
- Immediately report safety incidents and unsafe conditions in accordance with EHS protocols.
- Support onboarding, on-the-job training, and skill development of new operators.
- Identify recurring absenteeism, manpower gaps, and attrition trends and escalate them to HR & IR.
6. Reporting & Shift Handover
- Prepare and submit the shift-end production report covering:
- Production output vs. plan
- Line-wise performance
- Downtime and reasons
- Quality holds/deviations
- Material shortages
- Manpower shortfalls
- Safety observations/incidents
- WIP and pending actions
- Participate in daily shift-handover and production review meetings with the Production Head/Plant Head as required.
- Ensure 100% completeness and accuracy of shift documentation and handover records.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Shift Output vs. Plan: Achievement of daily line-wise production targets.
- Line OEE: Improvement in uptime, changeover time, performance, and first-pass yield.
- Quality Compliance: Zero unauthorized production beyond quality holds or missed QC checkpoints.
- Material Availability: Minimize production downtime caused by RM/PM shortages.
- Downtime Management: Timely response, escalation, and accurate recording of breakdowns.
- Safety: Zero reportable safety incidents and strict adherence to EHS requirements.
- Shift Handover: 100% accurate and documented shift handovers.
- Manpower Productivity: Effective deployment and utilization of available manpower.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree/Diploma in Production, Chemical, Food, Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent technical qualification/shop-floor experience.
- 3–5 years of experience in manufacturing shift leadership, preferably in cosmetics, personal care, FMCG, food, or filling/packing operations.
- Experience in a GMP-regulated manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Working knowledge of ISO 22716, GMP, BMR/batch documentation, and basic quality systems is desirable.
- Experience managing multi-line, multi-SKU filling and packing operations in a high-volume or fast-ramping manufacturing environment will be an advantage.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong shop-floor leadership and people-management skills.
- Ability to manage and resolve workforce conflicts in a rotating-shift environment.
- Strong real-time problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to deliver production targets without compromising quality, safety, or compliance.
- Working knowledge of production documentation, BMRs, and quality systems.
- Basic understanding of OEE, downtime analysis, and production KPIs.
- Proficiency in production reporting systems/ERP such as SAP or equivalent.
- Valuable coordination skills across Production, QC, Materials/Planning, Engineering/Maintenance, EHS, and HR/IR.
Working Conditions
- Rotational 3-shift operation (A/B/C), including night shifts, weekends, and holidays as per the factory operating schedule.
- Shop-floor based role requiring regular standing and walking across multiple production lines throughout the shift.
- Fast-paced manufacturing environment requiring continuous coordination with cross-functional teams and timely decision-making.
- The role requires a strong focus on safety, quality, productivity, discipline, and adherence to GMP/SOP requirements.
