Role Purpose
We are looking for Senior DevOps Engineers to build the automation and orchestration backbone of an enterprise internal developer platform (IDP) we are co-creating with a leading UK financial services organisation.
The platform, built on Port.io, gives the client's engineering teams self-service access to golden paths — cloud landing zones, standard images, pipelines and tooling — through a curated catalogue.
Your job is the machinery behind that catalogue: the GitHub Actions workflows and Temporal orchestrations that every self-service action triggers, the reusable pipeline templates that engineering teams consume, and the integrations that connect the portal to the delivery toolchain. These roles form the long-term engineering core of the platform team.
Key Responsibilities
- Workflow orchestration: Design and build the workflows behind self-service actions — GitHub Actions for standard workflows and Temporal for complex, long-running orchestrations — with Port.io as the common trigger.
- Pipeline products: Build and maintain reusable, versioned CI/CD pipeline templates that engineering teams across the organisation consume as golden paths.
- Toolchain integration: Integrate the developer portal with the delivery toolchain — GitHub, Terraform pipelines, security scanning (Wiz, Checkov, OPA), testing and cost tooling — so quality gates are embedded by default.
- Catalogue automation: Automate the publication, versioning and lifecycle of catalogue items, including the contribution workflows through which other teams add capabilities to the platform.
- Reliability: Own the operational quality of the orchestration layer: monitoring, error handling, retries and idempotency for platform workflows.
- Engineering standards: Set and uphold standards for workflow code — review, testing, documentation — and mentor mid-level engineers across the distributed team.
- Collaboration:
Work day-to-day with the platform and back-end engineers in Portugal and India, and with the UK-based Solution Architect on orchestration design.
Required Experience
- 6+ years: in DevOps, platform or infrastructure engineering, with strong software engineering fundamentals.
- CI/CD depth: Advanced, hands-on experience designing and building GitHub Actions workflows (or equivalent, with willingness to standardise on GitHub Actions) — reusable workflows, composite actions, secrets management and runner strategy.
- Workflow orchestration: Experience with durable workflow engines (Temporal, or comparable such as Airflow, Step Functions, Argo Workflows) and the patterns behind reliable, long-running automation.
- Infrastructure as Code: Solid working experience with Terraform and how IaC delivery integrates into pipelines.
- Scripting and APIs: Strong scripting (Python, TypeScript/Node.js or Go) and experience automating against REST APIs and webhooks.
- Agile distributed delivery: Experience in sprint-based, distributed teams; clear written and spoken English for daily collaboration with UK and Portugal colleagues.
Technologies & Tools The platform is built on a up-to-date, standardised toolchain:
- Developer portal: Port.io — catalogue, blueprints and self-service actions.
- Orchestration: GitHub Actions (standard workflows); Temporal (complex, durable workflows).
- Delivery toolchain: GitHub, Terraform, Wiz, Checkov, OPA, tflint, terraform-docs, Infracost, Terratest.
- Integrations: ServiceNow (approvals, CMDB), observability tooling, enterprise identity and RBAC.
- Cloud platforms: AWS and Azure as the platforms the golden paths deploy to.
Desirable
- Hands-on Port.io or Backstage experience (self-service actions, catalogue automation).
- Temporal in production.
- Kubernetes and container platform experience.
- Experience integrating with ServiceNow or other ITSM platforms.
- Experience in financial services or similarly regulated environments.
