JOB DESCRIPTION - PERFUSIONIST

Department: Cardiac OT / Cath Lab
Reports To: Cardiac Surgeon / OT Incharge / Medical Superintendent

Position Summary:
The Perfusionist is responsible for operating the heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass machine) during cardiac surgeries and ensuring proper circulation and oxygenation of blood while the heart is stopped.

Key Responsibilities:
- Operate and manage the cardiopulmonary bypass machine during open heart surgeries
- Monitor patient’s vital parameters, blood flow, oxygen levels, and temperature during procedures
- Prepare and check all perfusion equipment before surgery
- Assist cardiac surgeons during procedures like CABG, valve replacement, pediatric cardiac surgeries:
- Maintain proper anticoagulation levels (ACT monitoring)
- Handle blood products and maintain records during surgery
- Ensure proper sterilization and maintenance of perfusion equipment
- Maintain accurate documentation of perfusion data and case records
- Be available for emergency cardiac procedures (24/7 on-call support if required)

Pre-Operative Duties:




- Check machine functionality and safety
- Prepare circuits, oxygenators, and required disposables
- Coordinate with OT team, anesthetist, and surgeon

Post-Operative Duties:
- Safely wean patient from bypass machine
- Clean and disinfect equipment
- Maintain case records and reports
- Report any complications or technical issues

Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of cardiac physiology and perfusion techniques:
- Ability to work in high-pressure OT workplace
- Attention to detail and critical thinking
- Team coordination and communication skills

Qualification & Experience:
- B.Sc / M.Sc in Perfusion Technology or equivalent
- Minimum 1-3 years of experience in cardiac hospital (preferred)
- Freshers with internship in cardiac centre can also apply
