Summary
Saint-Gobain, a global leader in advanced glazing and functional materials, is seeking a highly motivated Research Engineer with strong academic qualifications (M.Tech/PhD) in Optics, Photonics, Display Engineering, Applied Physics, Electrical/ Electronics Engineering, or related fields.
The ideal candidate should have solid understanding of optics, thin-film coatings, light–matter interaction, display technologies, and should be experienced in simulation tools as well as hands-on display/light system development. A self-driven, energetic individual with robust willingness to learn, explore new topics, and create innovative solutions is essential.
Responsibilities
Optics & Display Technology Development
Lead and support development of HUD, electroluminescent lamps/displays, transparent displays, and lighting-integrated glazing systems.
Design optical architectures including light guides, HOEs, collimators, diffusers, microstructures, and thin film stacks.
Model thin-film behaviour for optical functionalities such as transmission, reflection, scattering, emission efficiency, color tuning, and luminance distribution.
Prototyping & Hands-On Development
Fabricate and evaluate lab-scale prototypes (EL panels, light guides, PDLC, micro-LED/LCD, OLED-based concepts).
Work on thin-film coatings (vacuum & wet), printing methods, and light extraction structures relevant to display/lighting systems.
Conduct optical, electrical, mechanical, and durability testing for display and lighting modules.
Research & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Carry out projects independently and with global competency teams, start-ups, universities, and research partners.
Provide technical support to business lines and PLs for new product development (NPD).
Lab & Quality Responsibilities
Maintain lab documentation, follow EHS guidelines, and participate in 5S and continuous improvement initiatives.
Contribute to invention disclosures, patent generation, and technical reports.
Desired Skills & Experience
Education
M.Tech or PhD in Optics, Photonics, Applied Physics, Display Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or related fields.
2–5 years of relevant experience in display, lighting, or optical engineering (industry or research labs).
Technical Expertise
Strong understanding of
Optical design principles – geometrical and physical optics.
Thin-film coatings (vacuum deposition, sputtering, ALD, or wet coatings).
Display technologies – EL displays, HUD systems, LIG, micro-LED/OLED, LCD, light guides, and backlights.
Good to have
Optical simulation software (Zemax/LightTools/COMSOL/Ansys).
Prototyping/processing tools for optical films, coatings, or display modules.
