1. Job Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and other clinical specimens from patients safely, accurately, and efficiently. The role includes patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, handling, processing, documentation, and ensuring proper infection-control and safety practices.
1. Key Responsibilities

Patient Handling
- Greet patients professionally and create a comfortable environment.
- Verify patient identity and test requirements before sample collection.
- Explain the sample collection procedure to patients.
- Handle children, elderly patients, and difficult-to-collect patients with care.
- Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.

Blood & Sample Collection
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection using appropriate techniques.
- Collect specimens according to laboratory requirements and test protocols.
- Ensure the correct tube/container is used for each investigation.
- Follow proper order of draw and sample collection procedures.
- Collect urine, stool, swab, sputum, and other specimens when required and within the scope of training.
- Minimize patient discomfort and avoid complications during collection.
- Ensure adequate sample volume and quality.

Sample Identification & Handling
- Label all specimens immediately and accurately in the patient's presence or according to institutional SOP.
- Verify patient details, test requests, barcode, and specimen type.
- Ensure samples are stored and transported at the required temperature and within the prescribed time.
- Identify and report unsuitable, insufficient, clotted, hemolyzed, or mislabeled specimens according to laboratory SOPs.
- Ensure proper sample segregation and transportation to the laboratory.

Infection Control & Safety




- Follow standard precautions and infection-control protocols.
- Use appropriate PPE during specimen collection and handling.
- Maintain proper hand hygiene before and after every patient interaction.
- Dispose of needles and other sharps immediately in approved sharps containers.
- Follow biomedical-waste management procedures.
- Report needle-stick injuries, spills, or other incidents immediately to the appropriate authority.

Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of collected specimens.
- Update sample collection details in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), where applicable.
- Maintain daily collection and dispatch records.
- Ensure all samples are properly accounted for before dispatch to the laboratory.

Home Collection
- Perform home blood/sample collection when assigned.
- Carry required collection materials, PPE, transport containers, and documentation.
- Maintain proper specimen integrity during transportation.
- Provide professional patient service during home visits.
- Complete collection and payment/documentation procedures as per company policy.

1. Equipment & Material Management

- Maintain cleanliness and readiness of the sample collection area.
- Check availability of vacutainers, needles, syringes, swabs, gloves, disinfectants, and other consumables.
- Monitor stock levels and inform the concerned person when supplies need replenishment.
- Ensure proper storage of sample collection materials.

1. Quality & Compliance

- Follow laboratory SOPs and quality-management procedures.




- Ensure accurate patient identification and specimen labeling.
- Participate in internal quality and safety initiatives.
- Cooperate during audits and inspections.
- Maintain skilled standards and comply with organizational policies.

1. Qualifications

- DMLT / B.Sc. MLT / Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or relevant qualification.
- Candidates with appropriate phlebotomy certification/training may also be considered, depending on organizational requirements.

1. Experience

- Freshers: Can be considered based on skill and practical competency.
- Experienced: 13 years of experience in a diagnostic centre, hospital, laboratory, or sample collection centre preferred.
- Experience in home sample collection will be an added advantage.

- Good venipuncture and specimen-collection skills.
- Good knowledge of blood collection tubes and specimen requirements.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Good patient-handling and communication skills.
- Ability to handle difficult veins and anxious patients.
- Knowledge of infection-control practices.
- Basic computer/LIS knowledge.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good time-management skills.

- Low rate of rejected/unsuitable samples.
- Patient satisfaction.
- Compliance with infection-control and safety procedures.
- Timely sample dispatch.
- Proper documentation and LIS updating.
- Effective handling of home-collection assignments.

1. Working Conditions

- Work may involve standing for extended periods.
- May be required to work in shifts, weekends, and holidays based on centre requirements.
- Home collection duties may involve travel to patient locations.
- Strict compliance with infection-control, occupational-safety, and specimen-handling procedures is mandatory.
