Role Overview
We are looking for a strategic and experienced communications and marketing leader to drive the media, content, communications and brand storytelling agenda for Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS). The role is responsible for shaping how IIS is positioned and represented across media, digital platforms, athlete storytelling, institutional communications and key sporting moments. The role combines strategic planning with hands-on execution, working closely with athletes, coaches, leadership, partners, donors, agencies and internal teams.
The role will serve as a key custodian of the IIS brand narrative — defining what we say, how we say it, where we say it and how we build sustained visibility for IIS, its athletes, programmes and impact.
Key Responsibilities
1. Media, Communications & Brand Strategy
- Develop and lead the annual media, communications and content strategy for IIS, aligned with organisational priorities, sporting calendars and long-term brand objectives.
- Own IIS's external narrative across earned media, digital, social, institutional and stakeholder communications.
- Develop proactive media strategies around major sporting milestones, athlete achievements, institutional announcements and strategic initiatives.
- Build and maintain relationships with relevant national and sports media, publishers and other communication stakeholders.
- Lead communications around high-profile sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and LA 2028 journey.
- Identify and manage reputational and communications risks, including crisis and sensitive communications where required.
2. Content & Storytelling
- Own the overall content strategy and editorial direction across IIS's digital and social ecosystem.
- Establish and maintain a consistent brand voice, tone and visual/editorial language across platforms.
- Develop content narratives around athletes, coaches, programmes, sporting achievements, institutional milestones and IIS's wider impact.
- Lead the ideation and execution of content across formats including video, social, long-form storytelling, photography, graphics, web and editorial content.
- Plan and oversee content calendars around sporting events, athlete milestones, campaigns and institutional priorities.
- Work closely with creative teams, production partners, agencies and internal stakeholders to deliver high-quality content.
3. Marketing & Campaigns
- Develop and execute integrated marketing and communication campaigns to strengthen IIS's brand awareness and positioning.
- Lead content-led launches and campaigns for new sports programmes, initiatives and IIS properties.
- Develop campaigns that translate IIS's athlete development and sporting impact into compelling public-facing narratives.
- Oversee campaign planning, execution, measurement and optimisation across relevant channels.
- Identify opportunities to leverage major sporting events and cultural moments to increase IIS's visibility.
4. Athlete & Sporting Communications
- Develop storytelling frameworks that bring IIS athlete journeys, performances and human-interest stories to life.
- Lead communications and content planning around athletes participating in major international competitions.
- Work with coaches, programme managers and athlete support teams to identify stories, milestones and opportunities.
- Coordinate media opportunities, interviews, athlete features and other visibility initiatives.
5. Donor & Stakeholder Communications
- Own the communications and content dimension of IIS donor relationships and partnerships.
- Develop brand-integrated storytelling and campaigns that demonstrate the impact of donor support.
- Lead content inputs for donor communications, impact stories and the annual report/funding impact narrative.
- Work closely with leadership and internal stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging across institutional and external communications.
6. Agency, Team & Budget Management
- Lead and manage an in-house media/content team and external agency partners.
- Define agency scopes, identify/select partners, manage workflows and ensure quality and timely delivery.
- Provide strategic and creative direction to agencies across content, PR, digital, design, production and related requirements.
- Own and manage the annual marketing and communications budget, including planning, allocation and vendor management.
- Establish effective processes for prioritisation, approvals, production and delivery across multiple stakeholders.
7. Digital & Owned Platforms
- Lead the content and communications strategy across IIS's owned digital platforms, including social media and website.
- Oversee the strategic development and evolution of the IIS digital ecosystem.
- Ensure the website and social platforms effectively communicate IIS's programmes, athletes, achievements and institutional impact.
- Track content and digital performance and use insights to inform future strategy.
8. Strategic Projects & Brand Development
- Lead major brand and communications projects that strengthen IIS's long-term positioning.
- Drive strategic initiatives such as website redevelopment, brand assets, institutional storytelling and the IIS Inspire Museum project.
- Coordinate multiple agencies, departments and senior stakeholders to deliver complex projects end-to-end.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen the relationship between IIS, JSW Sports and the wider JSW ecosystem.
9. JSW Sports / Ecosystem Integration
- Collaborate across IIS and JSW Sports properties to identify opportunities for shared storytelling, audience development and brand amplification.
- Lead communications and content strategy for relevant cross-property initiatives and partnerships.
- Provide strategic communications and content counsel to other JSW Sports properties where required.
Key Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in media, communications, content, marketing, brand or related roles, preferably within sports, media, entertainment or adjacent industries.
- Strong understanding of sports media, digital content, PR, brand storytelling and integrated communications.
- Demonstrated experience developing and executing strategic communication and marketing plans.
- Experience managing teams, agencies, vendors and significant budgets.
- Strong editorial judgement with the ability to turn complex institutional, sporting or athlete stories into compelling narratives.
- Experience working with senior stakeholders, athletes, coaches, partners, donors and media.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple high-priority initiatives simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of social and digital platforms and evolving content formats.
- Ability to operate comfortably between strategy and execution in a quick-paced sporting environment.
- Passion for sport and a strong understanding of the role that storytelling and communications play in building sports properties and athlete brands.
