LAB TECHNICIAN – HOSPITAL

Position: Lab Technician / Medical Laboratory Technician

Department: Laboratory

Location: Pammal

Reports To: Laboratory In-Charge / Pathologist / Hospital Administration

Job Summary

Responsible for performing laboratory tests, collecting and processing patient samples, maintaining laboratory equipment and records, and ensuring accurate and timely test results while following hospital safety, quality and infection-control standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Sample Collection & Processing

- Collect blood, urine, stool, swab and other clinical samples as required.
- Properly identify, label and transport patient samples.
- Ensure samples are collected and processed according to standard procedures.
- Handle samples carefully to avoid contamination or incorrect results.
- Follow proper procedures for storage and disposal of samples.

2. Laboratory Testing

- Perform routine hematology, biochemistry, clinical pathology and other laboratory investigations as per qualification and laboratory requirements.
- Operate laboratory analyzers and other diagnostic equipment.
- Perform manual laboratory tests where required.
- Ensure test results are accurate and completed within the required turnaround time.
- Immediately report critical or abnormal results to the concerned authority as per hospital protocol.

3. Equipment & Quality Control

- Operate laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
- Perform daily equipment checks and basic maintenance.
- Ensure reagents, consumables and laboratory materials are properly stored.
- Check reagent expiry dates and maintain appropriate stock levels.
- Perform quality-control procedures as instructed.
- Report equipment malfunction, breakdown or quality issues to the Laboratory In-Charge.

Documentation & Reporting

- Maintain accurate laboratory records and registers.
- Enter test results correctly into the laboratory/Hospital Information System.
- Verify patient details before processing and reporting results.
- Maintain records of samples, tests, quality-control activities and equipment maintenance.
- Ensure reports are released within the required turnaround time.

5. Patient & Hospital Coordination

- Communicate politely with patients during sample collection.
- Provide basic instructions to patients regarding sample collection as per laboratory protocol.
- Coordinate with doctors, nurses, reception/front office and other departments regarding investigations.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory results.

6. Safety & Infection Control

- Follow hospital infection-control policies and laboratory safety procedures.
- Use appropriate PPE while handling patient samples.
- Follow proper biomedical waste segregation and disposal procedures.
- Handle needles, blood and other potentially infectious materials safely.
- Immediately report accidental exposure, needle-stick injuries or other safety incidents.

7. Professional Responsibilities

- Maintain proper grooming, uniform and professional conduct.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory.
- Follow duty schedules and shift timings.




- Participate in internal training and quality-improvement activities.
- Follow all hospital policies, SOPs and instructions from the Laboratory In-Charge.
- Perform other laboratory-related duties assigned by the management.

Qualification

- DMLT / B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc. MLT) or equivalent recognized qualification.
- Relevant registration/licensing, wherever applicable.
- Previous hospital or diagnostic laboratory experience preferred.
- Freshers may be considered based on qualification and suitability.

Required Skills

- Good knowledge of laboratory procedures and sample handling.
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment and analyzers.
- Good attention to detail and accuracy.
- Knowledge of infection control and biomedical waste management.
- Good communication and patient-handling skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to work in rotational shifts, including night shifts if required.

- Timely completion of investigations and reports.
- Proper sample identification and handling.
- Compliance with laboratory SOPs and quality-control procedures.
- Proper maintenance and utilization of laboratory equipment.

- Patient service and communication.
- Proper documentation and record maintenance.
- Attendance, punctuality and professional discipline.
