The Secretariat (www.thesecretariat.in) | New Delhi | Full-Time The Secretariat is looking for a sharp, curious and ambitious journalist who can go beyond conventional reporting to identify important trends, connect disparate signals and uncover stories that matter. The ideal candidate combines strong journalistic instincts with an ability to work with data and understand the larger forces shaping policy, governance, business and geopolitics.

What we are looking for

- Strong reporting and writing skills, with experience covering policy, governance, and bureaucracy.
- Comfortable working with data, reports, datasets and public information to discover patterns, insights and original stories.
- Ability to spot emerging trends, connect dots and identify new story opportunities before they become mainstream.
- Solid understanding of India’s policy and institutional ecosystem, with the curiosity to explore how government decisions affect business, society and the economy.
- Experience with a digital-first or new-generation media platform is highly desirable; an understanding of modern storytelling and digital audiences will be an advantage.

Responsibilities

- Identify and develop original stories, investigations, explainers and trend pieces around policy,



governance, business and geopolitics.
- Use data, documents, government reports and primary sources to find evidence and uncover stories.
- Build and maintain a strong network of sources across government, bureaucracy, industry, experts and institutions.
- Follow emerging developments closely and convert early signals into distinctive, timely stories.
- Work with editors and the wider newsroom to develop stories across written, data-led and digital formats.

Work Experience

- 5+ years of relevant journalism experience preferred.
- Experience covering policy, government, bureaucracy, geopolitics, geoeconomics, business or the economy.
- Demonstrated ability to independently report, research, analyse and write high-quality stories.
- Experience at a digital-first, new-generation media organization is a strong advantage.
- Candidates with experience in data journalism, investigative journalism or explanatory journalism will be particularly valued.

The right candidate is someone who doesn’t just ask, “What happened?” but also asks, “What is changing, why is it changing, and what does it mean?”
