Purpose of the Role The Shop Head is responsible for the end-to-end performance of the assigned manufacturing shop, ensuring safe, reliable, quality-driven and cost-effective operations aligned with SQPDCME objectives. The role leads manufacturing execution, equipment reliability, automation, quality, manpower, cost, supply-chain readiness and new product launches, with strong expertise in Weld & Press Shop operations, industrial robotics, PLCs and highly automated manufacturing, while driving OEE, productivity, loss elimination and sustained manufacturing capability.

Job Responsibilities

1. Manufacturing Planning & Shop Operations

•Lead end-to-end shop operations in line with S&OP;, production plans and SQPDCME targets.

•Drive production volume, mix, schedule adherence, OEE, productivity and line balancing.

•Optimize utilization of manpower, machines, robots, presses, fixtures and other resources.

•Identify and eliminate constraints, bottlenecks and chronic production losses through structured problem solving.

•Ensure reliable operation and sustained capability of manufacturing equipment and facilities.

2. Equipment Reliability, Robotics, PLC & Automation

•Lead highly automated lines involving industrial robots, PLCs, automation systems, sensors, actuators, conveyors and machine interfaces.

•Drive equipment availability, OEE, MTBF and MTTR through TPM and preventive/predictive maintenance.

•Improve reliability and utilization of robotic and automated systems and reduce automation-related downtime.

•Drive RCA and permanent countermeasures for recurring equipment, robot, PLC and controls failures.

•Ensure availability of critical spares, tools, dies, fixtures and consumables.

•Partner with Manufacturing Engineering / Technical Services on automation upgrades, digitalization and smart manufacturing.

3. Weld & Press Shop Operations

•Drive operational excellence across Weld and Press Shops, ensuring capability, reliability and productivity of robotic welding cells, presses, dies, fixtures and material handling systems.

•Optimize process capability, cycle time, bottlenecks, line balancing and equipment utilization.

•Reduce weld defects, dimensional deviations, press defects, rejection and rework.

•Ensure effective die, fixture, tooling and changeover management.

•Lead resolution of recurring manufacturing and process issues.

4. New Product Launch & Manufacturing Readiness

•Collaborate with Engineering, Launch, ERC, Quality and Technical Services for current product introduction.

•Lead line fitment, tooling, equipment, automation and process validation trials.

•Ensure readiness of robots, PLCs, presses, dies, fixtures and production systems.

•Lead shop-level CFTs for launch issue resolution and monitor commissioning, ramp-up and stabilization.

•Deliver SOP, ramp-up and manufacturing readiness targets.

5. Quality & Customer Assurance

•Drive product/process quality and adherence to WCQ, IATF 16949 and applicable standards.

•Monitor CAPA and reduce defects, rejection, rework and PDI issues.

•Ensure effective RCA and sustainable corrective actions.

•Drive timely resolution of customer complaints and quality concerns.

6. Safety & Compliance





•Drive a zero-incident manufacturing environment in line with Tata Motors safety standards.

•Ensure safe operation of robots, presses, welding systems, dies and automated equipment.

•Ensure compliance with machine guarding, interlocks, LOTO and statutory requirements.

•Review incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions and drive preventive actions and closure of safety gaps.

7. Supply Chain & Production Readiness

•Ensure availability of materials, tools, facilities and consumables for uninterrupted production.

•Coordinate with Supply Chain / Warehouse on material availability, FIFO, kitting and line-side management.

•Monitor production and dispatch requirements and ensure timely rejected-material disposition.

•Prevent production losses due to material and supply constraints.

8. People, Manpower & Employee Relations

•Plan manpower based on volumes, automation levels, shifts and productivity targets.

•Partner with HR / PSD on organization structure, manpower deployment, capability development and succession planning.

•Drive performance management, multi-skilling and cross-skilling.

•Engage with unions on productivity, manpower, discipline and employee relations.

•Build accountability, continuous improvement and operational ownership.

9. Cost & Business Performance

•Monitor and control VCC/FCC, including rejection, tooling, IDM, energy, compressed air and other operating costs.

•Drive productivity, loss elimination and process optimization to achieve benchmark costs.

•Lead TCS, QMSG, Lean, Kaizen and other cost-improvement initiatives.

•Prepare and manage Shop CAPEX and Revenue budgets and ensure adherence to approved plans.

10. Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence

•Drive overall SQPDCME performance and sustained improvement.

•Eliminate bottlenecks, chronic losses and non-value-added activities.

•Benchmark and deploy manufacturing best practices.

•Lead Lean, TPM, Six Sigma, Kaizen and digital manufacturing initiatives.

•Establish a data-driven problem-solving culture focused on productivity, quality, reliability, cost and safety.

Desired Candidate Profile

Qualification: B.E. / B.Tech. in Mechanical, Production, Industrial, Mechatronics or Automation Engineering; Robotics / Automation specialization is an advantage.

Desired Work Experience: 18–25 years in automotive manufacturing, with significant Weld Shop and/or Press Shop experience. Hands-on industrial robotics, PLC and highly automated manufacturing experience is mandatory.

Necessary Knowledge: Weld & Press Shop operations, robotic welding, industrial robotics, PLCs, automation controls, presses/dies, manufacturing planning, OEE, TPM, MTBF/MTTR, Lean/Six Sigma, NPI, CAPEX, VCC/FCC, quality and safety systems.

Desired Industry & Sectors: Automotive OEM / Tier-1, high-volume discrete manufacturing, automated/smart manufacturing, industrial robotics & automation,



Press/Stamping and BIW/Weld Shop operations.
