About the Role
Wakefit is building one of a kind in India — a company pioneering e-commerce-led furniture manufacturing and design at scale. We're looking for a skilled Furniture Design Engineer to own the end-to-end design of individual furniture products — from early concept through production-ready drawings — that are functional, appealing, and easy to manufacture at scale. This role sits at the intersection of design and manufacturing: you'll work closely with product designers and the production floor to ensure every panel, joint, and profile is cut right the first time, every time.
What You'll Do
- Program CNC machines (5 axis CNC routers, Multiboring machine, etc.) for cutting, drilling, routing, and shaping solid wood and wood-based panel components.
- Convert 2D/3D CAD drawings (from design software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar) into optimized Code for CNC machine
- Optimize nesting and cutting layouts to minimize material wastage — a critical lever given the volumes of solid wood and panel material processed.
- Set up and calibrate machines, select appropriate tooling (bits, blades, drill heads) based on material type, grain direction, and finish requirements specific to solid wood.
- Run first-article and pilot batches, inspect output against drawings/tolerances, and fine-tune programs before full production release.
- Troubleshoot programming and machining issues in real time — tool wear, material inconsistency, warping, or tolerance drift — to minimize downtime and rejections.
- Maintain and update a library of programs for existing SKUs, and version-control changes as designs evolve.
- Ensure quality and safety compliance — dimensional accuracy, surface finish standards, and adherence to machine safety protocols.
- Document work instructions and train machine operators on running programs correctly.
What We're Looking For Must-haves:
- 2–8 years of hands-on experience programming CNC machines.
- Experience in furniture industry is preferable but not necessarry.
- Working knowledge of CAM software (e.g., AlphaCAM, Mastercam, or equivalent) and ability to read/interpret CAD drawings.
- Solid understanding of woodworking joinery types (dowel, mortise-tenon, dado, rabbet, etc.) and how they translate into machine programs.
- Practical knowledge of tooling selection for different wood species and panel materials.
- Strong troubleshooting instincts — comfortable being on the shop floor, not just at a workstation.
- Understanding of tolerances, material behavior (expansion/contraction, grain direction, moisture content), and how they affect cutting parameters.
- Diploma/ITI/B.Tech in Mechanical, Production, Tool & Die, or Wood Technology (formal education is a plus, not a strict requirement — solid hands-on experience matters more).
