Reading & Understanding Drawings

- Interpret isometric drawings, P&ID; references, and fabrication sketches
- Understand:
- Bend angles and bend radius
- Orientation (horizontal/vertical plane)
- Cut length and developed length
- Identify pipe material (CS, SS, alloy, etc.) and schedule/thickness

Machine Setup & Operation

- Set up pipe bending machines (manual, hydraulic, CNC, induction type)
- Select correct:
- Dies and formers
- Mandrels (if required)
- Clamps and supports
- Adjust machine parameters:
- Bend angle
- Bend radius
- Speed and pressure

Pipe Preparation

- Measure, mark, and cut pipes to required length
- Ensure pipe ends are:
- Deburred
- Clean and free from rust, oil, or scale
- Check material identification before bending

Bending Process

- Perform bending as per drawing and procedure
- Maintain correct bend orientation and plane
- Avoid defects such as:
- Wrinkling
- Flattening (ovality)
- Cracking
- Wall thinning beyond acceptable limits

Quality Checks

- Verify:
- Bend angle using protractor/angle gauge
- Bend radius
- Dimensional accuracy vs drawing
- Check ovality and surface condition
- Mark and segregate rejected pieces

Maintenance of Tools & Equipment





- Perform routine machine checks and lubrication
- Ensure dies and mandrels are not worn or damaged
- Report machine faults or hydraulic leaks immediately

Safety Compliance

- Follow PPE requirements (gloves, goggles, helmet, safety shoes)
- Keep hands clear of pinch points during bending
- Follow safe lifting practices for heavy pipes
- Maintain clean and obstruction-free work area

Coordination with Fabrication Team

- Work closely with:
- Fitters
- Welders
- Supervisors
- QC inspectors

Additional Responsibilities (Senior/Experienced Benders)

- Develop bend allowance and bend deduction calculations
- Optimize material usage to reduce scrap
- Train junior operators
- Assist in method statements and bending procedures

Key Skills Required

- Knowledge of pipe schedules and materials
- Understanding of tolerances and fabrication standards
- Hands-on skill with bending machines
- Positive measurement and marking ability
- Basic knowledge of welding fit-up requirements
