One house. Three years. Everything in stone.

We are building a house in Paldi, Ahmedabad, and it is being built the old way — in solid carved sandstone. Roughly 12,000 cubic feet of Gwalior Mint. Domes. Cornices. Column capitals. Balusters. Ashlar walling that carries its own weight.

The design comes from Robert Adam in London, the finest classical architect working in England today. It is not a temple. It is a European classical building, with columns and orders in the Greek and Roman manner. But it is built the way a temple is built: stone on stone, carved by hand, no cladding, no shortcuts.

We are looking for one man to take charge of that stone.

What we need from you

Not an office job. You will be at the banker and on the site.

- Carve. Capitals, cornices, mouldings, balusters, enrichment. The capitals are the hardest work on this house and they have not been made yet.
- Make the templates. Take the full-size drawings from London and make the zinc or ply templates the other karigars work to.
- Judge the stone. Look at a block and know what can come out of it — the bed, the depth, the grain, where it will fail. Tell us when a drawing asks for something the block cannot give.
- Lead the other karigars. Set the standard, check the work, reject what is not right.
- Set out and fix. Course by course, on site, with the masons.

Who we are looking for

Someone who has spent his life in stone.

- Fifteen years or more with a hammer and chisel in your hand
- Sandstone above all. Marble also welcome.
- Temple work is exactly the right background. If you have worked at Pindwara, Sirohi, Bansi Paharpur, Sarmathura, Jaipur, Makrana or Dholpur — on a Jain temple, a Swaminarayan mandir, Akshardham, Ayodhya — we want to hear from you.
- You must be able to read a full-size drawing and make a template from it
- You must be able to teach and correct younger karigars

You do not need: a degree, English, or computer drawing. Not one of those things will carve a capital.

What we are honest about

We would rather tell you now than have you leave in three months.

- This is a three-year commitment on one building. We do not want a man who will go to the next site after one season.
- The work is exacting. Things will be rejected and carved again. The architect in London will comment on your work in writing.
- You will be answerable to the owner directly, not through a contractor.
- Accommodation in Ahmedabad will be arranged for you, and for your team if you bring one.

What we offer

A building that will stand for two hundred years, where every carved thing in it came from your hands. Very few karigars in India today get to work on one house for three years. Most spend their lives on repeat work. This is not that.

हम अहमदाबाद के पालडी में एक मकान बना रहे हैं,



और वह पुरानी रीति से बन रहा है — ठोस तराशे हुए बलुआ पत्थर में। लगभग १२,००० घन फुट ग्वालियर मिंट पत्थर। गुंबद, कॉर्निस, स्तंभों के शीर्ष (कैपिटल), जालीदार रेलिंग, और अपना भार स्वयं उठाने वाली पत्थर की दीवारें।

नक्शा लंदन के रॉबर्ट एडम का है, जो आज इंग्लैंड के सबसे बड़े शास्त्रीय वास्तुकार हैं। यह मंदिर नहीं है — यह यूरोपीय शास्त्रीय शैली की इमारत है, ग्रीक और रोमन स्तंभों वाली। पर बनेगी वैसे ही जैसे मंदिर बनता है: पत्थर पर पत्थर, हाथ की तराश, कोई क्लैडिंग नहीं, कोई छोटा रास्ता नहीं।

हमें एक ऐसा कारीगर चाहिए जो इस पूरे पत्थर के काम की कमान संभाले।

काम क्या होगा

दफ़्तर का काम नहीं है। आप बैंकर पर और साइट पर रहेंगे।

- तराशना। कैपिटल, कॉर्निस, गोलाई, रेलिंग, नक्काशी। कैपिटल इस मकान का सबसे कठिन काम है और अभी तक बना नहीं है।
- टेम्पलेट बनाना। लंदन से आए पूरे साइज़ के नक्शों से ज़िंक या प्लाई के टेम्पलेट बनाना, जिन पर बाकी कारीगर काम करें।
- पत्थर परखना। ब्लॉक देखकर बता देना कि उसमें से क्या निकलेगा — बेड कौन सा है, गहराई कितनी है, रेशा किधर है, कहाँ टूटेगा। और यह बताना कि नक्शा जो माँग रहा है वह इस ब्लॉक से नहीं निकलेगा।
- कारीगरों को चलाना। स्तर तय करना, काम जाँचना, जो ठीक न हो उसे मना करना।
- साइट पर लगवाना। राजमिस्त्रियों के साथ, कोर्स दर कोर्स।

किसकी तलाश है

ऐसे आदमी की जिसने अपनी ज़िंदगी पत्थर में बिताई हो।

- हथौड़ा-छेनी के साथ पंद्रह साल या उससे अधिक का अनुभव
- सबसे बढ़कर बलुआ पत्थर। संगमरमर का अनुभव भी स्वागत योग्य है।
- मंदिर का काम बिल्कुल सही पृष्ठभूमि है। यदि आपने पिंडवाड़ा, सिरोही, बंसी पहाड़पुर, सरमथुरा, जयपुर, मकराना या धौलपुर में काम किया है — जैन मंदिर,



स्वामीनारायण मंदिर, अक्षरधाम, अयोध्या — तो हम आपसे बात करना चाहते हैं।
- पूरे साइज़ का नक्शा पढ़कर उससे टेम्पलेट बनाना आना चाहिए
- छोटे कारीगरों को सिखाना और सुधारना आना चाहिए

इनकी ज़रूरत नहीं है: डिग्री, अंग्रेज़ी, या कंप्यूटर ड्राइंग। इनमें से कोई भी चीज़ कैपिटल नहीं तराशती।

जो बात हम साफ़ कह देना चाहते हैं

तीन महीने बाद आप छोड़कर जाएँ, उससे अच्छा है अभी बता दें।

- यह एक ही इमारत पर तीन साल का काम है। एक सीज़न के बाद अगली साइट पर चले जाने वाले आदमी की हमें ज़रूरत नहीं।
- काम कड़ा है। कुछ चीज़ें नामंज़ूर होंगी और दोबारा तराशनी पड़ेंगी। लंदन के वास्तुकार आपके काम पर लिखित टिप्पणी देंगे।
- आप ठेकेदार के नीचे नहीं, सीधे मालिक के प्रति जवाबदेह रहेंगे।
- अहमदाबाद में रहने की व्यवस्था आपके लिए, और आपकी टोली के लिए भी, की जाएगी।

हम क्या दे रहे हैं

एक ऐसी इमारत जो दो सौ साल खड़ी रहेगी, और जिसकी हर तराशी हुई चीज़ आपके हाथ की होगी। आज भारत में बहुत कम कारीगरों को एक ही मकान पर तीन साल काम करने को मिलता है। ज़्यादातर उम्र दोहराव के काम में निकल जाती है। यह वैसा काम नहीं है।
