Job Description – Senior Registrar, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Senior Registrar – Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R;)

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Responsibilities

- Conduct detailed history taking, physical examination and functional assessment of patients.
- Evaluate and manage patients in OPD, inpatient wards, rehabilitation units and emergency services.
- Manage patients with conditions including stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, amputations, musculoskeletal disorders, chronic pain and other disabling conditions.
- Formulate individualized rehabilitation goals and treatment plans.
- Participate in consultant rounds and review patients regularly.
- Monitor clinical progress and modify treatment plans as required.
- Identify medical complications and appropriately escalate complex cases to the consultant.
- Perform or assist with procedures within the scope of training and institutional privileges.
- Provide appropriate pre-operative and post-operative assessment and care where rehabilitation-related procedures or surgeries are undertaken.
- Prepare accurate admission notes, progress notes, procedure notes, discharge summaries and referral documentation.

2. Rehabilitation & Multidisciplinary Care

- Coordinate rehabilitation programmes with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists, nurses, prosthetists/orthotists and vocational rehabilitation professionals.
- Assess functional status, mobility, activities of daily living and participation limitations.
- Assist in prescription and follow-up of orthoses, prostheses, wheelchairs and other assistive devices.
- Participate in spasticity, pain, gait, stroke, spinal cord injury,



amputee and other specialty rehabilitation clinics as required.
- Counsel patients and families regarding prognosis, rehabilitation goals, home programmes and community reintegration.
- Facilitate continuity of care and appropriate follow-up after discharge.

3. Emergency & On-Call Duties

- Attend medical emergencies and acute deterioration of patients promptly.
- Provide initial assessment and stabilization within the scope of competence.
- Coordinate with relevant specialty teams when required.
- Participate in the departmental/hospital on-call roster.

4. Teaching & Academic Responsibilities

- Participate in teaching of junior residents, interns, students and allied health professionals.
- Conduct case presentations, seminars, journal clubs and clinical discussions.
- Participate in departmental academic meetings and multidisciplinary case conferences.
- Assist in development and implementation of clinical protocols and evidence-based practices.

5. Research & Quality Improvement

- Participate in clinical research, audits and departmental research projects.
- Assist in data collection, analysis and preparation of research papers/presentations.
- Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews and quality-improvement initiatives.
- Maintain awareness of current advances in PM&R; and rehabilitation technology.

6. Administrative & Qualified Responsibilities

- Maintain complete, accurate and timely medical records.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, infection-control procedures and patient-safety standards.
- Maintain professional communication with patients, relatives and multidisciplinary team members.
- Ensure appropriate handover of patients between shifts.
- Participate in outreach programmes, rehabilitation camps and community-based rehabilitation activities when required.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical and medico-legal requirements.
